Wreckfest Review (ColonelZechs)
The ultimate multiplayer game, if you're patient to learn.
The Good:
- No matter which vehicle you use, the most skilled driver usually wins, imposing a sense of fairness, as opposed to some racing games favoring purchasing special vehicles or microtransactions to get an advantage.
- Driving 200mph into your opponents in a Derby!
- Variety of vehicles to choose from. There isn't one best vehicle for all situations. Some vehicles are better for derbies, some better for asphalt w loops, some better on dirt, etc
- Fun to drive the weird vehicles, even if they don't usually win. Give me a Killer Pig or a Double Decker any day!
- Painting & decorating cars is fun. I love giving my Gatecrasher a red-orange-yellow flame theme, a purple-silver-blue stripe theme to my Starbeast, and an American-flag top hat to my red-white-blue American-flag themed Grand Duke, etc
- Simple to use Mods with new vehicles and tracks if you get bored of the ones that come with the game
The Bad:
- Grinding Fame points in Tourney to unlock Hammerhead RS, Battle Bus, etc. Would be nice if there was a second way to unlock these vehicles in Career mode instead of waiting a week or two to go thru Tourney mode.
- There's too many car parts per vehicle on average, and I can do with fewer, especially since this is more arcade-style demolition racing than realistic racing (ie games like F1, Forza, or Gran Turismo)
- Setting up a private server for my friends to do multiplayer is non-intuitive. Yes I figured it out, but this feels like more hoops than other similar games, and there should be a way to achieve similar via in-game menu. Not everyone is a software engineer for a living like I am... (FYI, the way I did it was steamcmd in Windows to download Wreckfest server, then with the correct TCP&UDP ports enabled for port-forwarding on my machine, start that Wreckfest server program w the settings I want)
- More of a nitpick but: Could use more derby courses, including more variety of derby events. My friends & I tend to do a ton of alternating btw racing and derbies, so if the ratio of races to derbies was closer to 1:1, as opposed to what it is at the moment (3:1), that could help.
