Ultimate General: Gettysburg Review (ParallaxFallout)
This game is frustrating. The best outcome I've gotten as the Union has been a draw. Once. My units will be on top of hills, triple the amount of men in the unit, and they just get shredded by a Confederate unit along a river. Cannons don't fire half the time even though they're placed right next to a firing artillery unit in open fields. My artillery never seems to fire into the fog of war, but I sure get a ton of hits from their artillery. I've taken several groups of guys, 1500+ and been beaten back by a lone Confederate group of 800 a few times. Like, ef off. Had a Confederate unit of 578 guys decimate my unit of 1943 when the Confederate guys charged it. Watched my units run off holding in 80% cover with 80% morale. Why? Really wasn't anything happening. Why did they take off like they were terrified?
Edit:
I finally won as the Union after trying different AI settings. I never really changed my strategy from my other attempts. I came to a minor victory the first mission, then a draw, then a horrible defeat and then I was in new territory playing missions I hadn't done before. Somehow managed a minor victory and then curb stomped the Confederacy for the win. Don't know why. I finally enjoyed a game, but overall it's still frustrating as a whole.
This has been my experience though and a lot of people have favorably reviewed it. I see a lot of what they've discussed, but all the annoying things I first wrote about still exist for balance purposes and just flat out ??? reasons. I unfortunately have two options, and I've disliked my time more than liked it. Maybe that will change the more I play. Still need to win as the Confederacy.
