Ultimate General: Gettysburg Review (neomagus00)
I can't recommend this game in 2024. That might sound unfair for a decade-old game, but it's still being sold, and I don't think you should buy it. My 20 minutes of play were mostly trying to get units selected and moving, and the rest was spent screaming at the cavalry.
The most basic part of a game like this is controlling your units, but UG:Gettysburg makes this difficult and annoying. You can't right-click to move or attack, it's left-click. Which is also the button to select, *de*select, and inspect units, so half the time you issue the wrong order.
When you finally get everyone moving, they... kinda do what you asked? Infantry more or less works, although they spend a lot of time running around for a unit that's set to "Hold"! Formation movement is included, but very difficult to use effectively.
Cavalry is a joke; they seem to break off the attack after one or two volleys, so you have to constantly re-order them to attack the same target. And why can't they charge? THEY HAVE SWORDS. A 180-man cavalry team should cut a 40-man artillery team down in seconds (once they've closed the distance) but instead the artillery routs the cav, after an *extended* firefight, without a single loss?
There might be a good game in here, but I'm not willing to put up with the frustrating experience to find it. And I know there are videos that walk you through the game, but I'm not reviewing YouTube, I'm reviewing the game as it was delivered.
Addendum: it might just be that I have wrong expectations about how Civil War units should behave. But there's no tutorial, and no background info provided in the game. So I have to go off other games like Total War, and my knowledge of historical tactics.
