Ultimate General: Gettysburg Review (Buster Kilrain)
Listen, I understand that you want a balanced game, you want to give the side that actually lost the battle a chance to win, but in doing so, they completely overpowered the confederates. I can’t lose with them and can’t beat them at the same time. It’s little things, they often get reinforcements earlier than they did historically, while the United States’s reinforcements arrive later than the historic record would indicate. Confederate forces also have more powerful artillery, which is totally false, their artillery units are better rated, again totally false. The confederate artillery was awful during the war, and completely mismanaged, but not in this game. Confederate troops often start out in more advantageous positions they would not have been in at beginning of scenarios, particularly the Little Round Top scenario where they appear almost on Little Round Top at the beginning on the scenario as if the 2nd United States Sharpshooters, the Union 3rd Corps, and General G.K. Warren were erased from the history books. There are ways of making the game fair without changing the history so much. The mechanics of the game are great and fun, but the history is rough at best. The limitation of Brigade formations are disappointing, but acceptable given the scope of the game. If you want a good war strategy game, but don’t care about the history too much, this game will work. If you’re a southern sympathizer or lost cause champion, this game is your wet dream.
