The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Review (Jack Bytez)

Incredibly fun game held back by some odd design choices and launch week issues.
Victim & Family Pros - Cons
+ 3 killers v 4 survivors is honestly quite refreshing.
+ The family members are all fun and inventive to play as, each with their own style in every meaning of the word: From gameplay to look to sound they are just perfect.
+ Victims have a ton of character and while each one is a lot more interchangeable than the killers, they have ONE unique ability each which can massively shake up the game.
- NO in game tutorial, instead a bunch of mini tutorial videos which are, in earnest, terrible. I'd much rather have a text option personally as that's how I learn better, but these long videos where it shows you a lot of basic stuff followed by the one piece of nugget you want is just not how you do tutorials in 23.
- There's one victim whose ability breaks the game so hard that the setup period of the game simply can't take place, that being Connie. If your Leatherface doesn't find and immediately kill her as soon as she spawns she can bypass the first mandatory locked door near instantly and set off Grandpa at level 0 which is where he does effectively nothing at all. While she's not the strongest in any given stat, the fact that she can straight bypass entire safety nets is a MASSIVE issue as it's totally possible on most maps to burn your ability to get a lockpick near instantly, then walk 5 feet and instantly open a door. With set maps and a team of people you can legitimately exit a match in under 3 minutes for barely any XP, but ya know, you CAN do it, and it's awful!
- Leland's ability to stun killers is appreciated given how little defense victims have, but it never feels like it does much until it's so specc'd into that you can win most games through just experience anyways.
- Family members that aren't Bubba can be stunned via a grapple mechanic, however if you grapple a family member and then another family member runs in they can instantly kill you. Mind you the risk - reward here is so incredibly lopsided as there is only risk and the reward is an INCREDIBLY minor stun against A family member, of which there are 3.
- Hitchhiker and Sissy are so incredibly hard to shake off that they feel terrible to verse, especially as they regain stamina while doing crawling actions through holes and thin cracks which means they will be at a FULL bar of stamina the entire time they follow you, combine this with both having incredibly potent area denials it gets frustrating quick.
Maps:
+ Maps are incredibly pretty
+ Key items in a map typically make noises to tell the family and victims that they are working, key examples being the moans of Grandpa, the hum of generators, etc.
- Maps vary incredibly wildly in balance. This is fine with some variety, but for the most part maps are stagnant and therefore the worst parts of them are as well. There's more than a couple Bubba-Only breakables that are completely meaningless on one map but can cut off an entire pathway on another, several vents are completely pointless and in others it can save you minutes on a chase against any family member that isn't Sissy or Hitchhiker.
Gameplay:
+ It's varied enough to stay enjoyable if you like grinding.
+ There is recolors for every victim and different outfits for Bubba, but currently he's the only killer with cosmetics which is a massive shame.
+ You can near totally disable voice chat which is a massive god send.
+ Sound auras hit at JUST the right time for you to react to them most times, and other times they do very little, but they are good enough as is.
+ You can customize each characters stats and even select different kill moves which is nice for variety.
- Sadly there is no consistent way to inform your team of events unless you waste a perk slot to do so. For instance family members get a perk that lets them do an aura read on any victim they hit, but it costs a perk slot that could ALSO be spent doing 20% more damage for basically free.
- There's really no chance for the final victim to make it out unless the Family is completely uncoordinated and / or blind. Similarly the Gallows mechanic for Bubba feels largely pointless as it's really slow to do and has very minimal payoff.
- There's already a toxic community, as per the usual with multiplayer game, so disable every form of interaction with it if you value your sanity.
+++ THERE'S A LOT OF EXTRA, BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE MOVIE CONTENT YOU CAN UNLOCK WHICH IS VERY, VERY, VERY COOL.
Overall the game is really solid and fun, but not worth 40 dollars. However if you're a big horror fan and can overlook some technical and severe balance issues you'll have a lot of fun. Here's hoping they sincerely look into Connie as her ability to bypass entire matches is just so absurd that it's hard to tell if it's a cheater or someone just picking the most OP character in the game.
