EDIT (5/13/25): GUN Media has officially announced that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will no longer receive any content updates, patches, or bug fixes.
PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
Loyal players stood by GUN Media through all of their past missteps, hoping they would eventually deliver. Instead, GUN has chosen to abandon the game entirely, breaking promises and spitting in the face of the very community that supported them. All previously teased or promised content is now scrapped.
This is exactly what happened with Friday the 13th: The Game. Avoid GUN pls.
Old Review:
I’d sooner recommend DBD over this game, and that says a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept of this game. It has great ideas in theory, and at times, it’s genuinely fun in execution. The Victim side (survivors) is way more interactive than in DBD, and the Family (killers) are also unique in their own ways. Plus, the ability to play as a killer with your friends is AWESOME—more asymmetrical games should have this feature. Gotta give kudos where it's due. Now, onto my gripes with this game.
Skill Tree:
Almost every character has unique stats and perks, which is great. However, navigating the skill tree is a nightmare. You have to click through tedious options and watch as perks unlock at a snail's pace. To make it worse, you can’t unlock all the perks. You’re forced to stick to specific paths, and some characters have downright awful ones.
The level cap in this game is 99. After you hit 99, you will no longer gain any XP. The devs had disappointingly made it clear that they have no intentions of increasing the level cap. This is why you often see many high level players quit games early on a whim. There is nothing else to grind for. No progression to work toward for.
Content Updates and Bugs:
Content updates are painfully slow. Outside of overpriced cosmetics (mostly recolors of one outfit), there’s very little new stuff. Bugs are rampant, and every update introduces more without fixing the old ones. The devs are infamously slow to address these issues, which makes it even more frustrating.
A glaring example is the possible bug where Victims are permanently highlighted by Grandpa after he screams, allowing the Family to track you endlessly. Devs once claimed to have fixed this issue in their patch notes, but it’s still very much a problem.
Another persistent bug occurs in the lobbies: if a player (usually a Family member) leaves, the lobby won’t fill their spot. To address this, the devs introduced a 3-minute penalty for leaving lobbies early while they "investigate" the issue. Yet, as of this writing, the bug still hasn’t been fixed. Worse, the penalty applies even if you leave a lobby full of known cheaters or disruptive players. Have fun being punished for not wanting to endure an unfair or toxic match.
Player Base:
The community is pretty toxic. The ability to use text and mic chat makes it worse, so I recommend muting everyone and playing with friends. Matchmaking times are also rough, and the player base is shrinking due to frustration over the lack of content, persistent bugs, and a hacker problem.
Matchmaking:
Often takes time due to the constant dwindling of the player base. And as mentioned above, 3-minute penalty for leaving lobbies early. There is another mode, called Rush Week that splits the player base further. Rush Week as the title says, is essentially a much faster paced version of the regular game mode, except, for whatever reason, you cannot earn XP in it. But the devs thought its a good idea to release paid cosmetics for it. Great.
Hackers:
Hackers are a HUGE issue. There are well-known hackers who show up in lobbies constantly. And most players just leave immediately because these hackers been reported so many times, for months end with no action still taken. Reporting in-game is POINTLESS—it’s like shouting into the void. Gun doesn't care. They would even copyright channels of hackers posting their videos on YouTube but won't do anything to actually punish them.
Meta:
The current meta is terrible for both sides. As Family, you’re supposed to focus on defending objectives, but the “rush meta” forces you to hunt Victims down immediately. As Victims, you must rush objectives because taking your time gets you killed. Stealth is practically useless. Both sides are frustrated, but the devs aren’t addressing the problem. On top of that, stuns are infuriating—doors and grappling are abused to punish Family players constantly.
Meta Slavery:
Meta Slavery is real in this game. For Family, if you want a better chance of winning, you’re essentially forced to play specific characters and sweat your way through matches. The same applies to Victims to a lesser extent, with certain builds like Rush Connie, Distractor Leland, or Tank Ana dominating the meta. The lack of flexibility in viable character choices makes the game feel repetitive and frustrating for many players.
Character Balance:
Some characters are blatantly pay-to-win. For example, when Danny was first released, he could permanently open an exit, giving him a massive advantage. The devs intentionally left him in this overpowered state for a long time to maximize profits. Once again, the devs are incredibly slow to address balancing issues, whether it’s fixing overpowered characters or buffing underwhelming ones.
Wyatt, the new survivor, is absurdly broken (literally and figuratively speaking) and blatantly pay-to-win.
His stats are the best among all Victims, with his only "weakness" being stealth—which is the worst stat anyway. His star sign ability, the throwing knives, is ridiculously overpowered. At tier three, they can disable objectives from insane distances, and in some cases, even stun-lock Family members during certain animations. The knives completely bypass the 10-second stun immunity that Family is supposed to have.
For example, you can equip the Choose Fight perk (which increases stun duration after grappling a family member) and follow up with a knife throw to essentially chain stuns on that specific Family player. It’s absurdly unfair. And to make matters worse, the knives are buggy. Throwing them at fellow Victims can crash the game entirely. Lastly, sometimes the ability doesn't even work. Wyatt will just stand there awkwardly, leaving him open to get hit.
This is yet another example of GUN not playtesting their content. They just pump out half-baked DLC and leave it broken for months before addressing the issues.
New Player Experience:
This game is not beginner-friendly at ALL. Leveling up characters is a slow grind, and new players are at a massive disadvantage against veterans with max-level perks and optimized stats. Some characters special abilities feel downright terrible at base level (level 1), making the grind even more painful. You will have to grind them to level 3 just to get better quality of life (Looking at you, Danny and Sonny). Matchmaking doesn’t help, it regularly pits noobs against veterans. Not to mention, the games tutorial doesn't explain enough about the game to you. You're left to figure things out on your own. On the flip side, if you're an experienced player, you can find yourself paired up with noobs who don't have the common sense to lock doors or not make unnecessary noise.
Overall:
Despite my time with the game, I can’t recommend it. The devs seem more interested in selling cosmetics than fixing glaring issues or improving the experience. Between the bugs, lack of updates, hacker problems, and awful grindy progression, this game can be incredibly frustrating. Game can still be very fun at times, but I think if you really want to buy this game, do it when it's half off. Also buy characters and cosmetics on sale, there are some pretty good deals every now and then. Try to get a friend to play with you too. It's hellish as a solo player. I would NEVER buy a gun game again. Pump and dumping amazing horror IP seems to be their forte.
