The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Review (bug in my ass crack)
To answer the question, is the game better than DBD?
Well that's a complicated question. If you were to ask me which game was better at launch, I would say TCM 100%. However, since the games initial launch, DBD has 28 licensed characters from classic horror films including Texas Chainsaw. While you may be thinking, what does this have to do with the gameplay? People love to play as their favorite movie character and DBD provides many options for that to happen. Also, by having that many licensed characters, it allows for more unique gameplay whereas TCM the killers are limited to 5 which is still 2 more than dbds initial release. Although, they don't have as many killers, their powers and objectives are still unique. Having 3 killers in each game also allows friends to play killer together which is not an option in dbd. There are 4 different ways to loop/dodge killers in this game such as squeezing through a space, crawling under a space, vaulting over a space and running past a door and slamming it in the killers face. There are even characters that can fight back against the killer which is extremely satisfying to do.
Your main objective as survivor in the game is to pick locks so that you can escape but there are multiple ways to do so whereas in DBD you are forced to do gens and open the gate. In TCM, you can power a gate with a valve or fuse, lockpick your way out or even follow the killer outside when they're looking for another survivor. The maps also have traps which is quite refreshing to interact with. The game relies on strategy and teamwork to succeed whereas DBD you just do your objective while someone else is being chased. As killer, every person has a unique objective to accomplish in order to find and kill the survivors making the role feel vital for each person playing. Cosmetic wise, your powers and perks are linked to the character you leveled which I don't mind, but i understand if other have issues with. So far the perks feel good and not too op or weak on both killer and survivor.
I currently enjoy this game more than DBD and the game also gives you ample opportunities to escape the killers grasp early game making it hard for killers to tunnel (one of DBD's biggest problems). The game does have some network issues when connecting to a lobby but that's to be expected on release day. The only issue is that the game runs out of players because that seems to be the cause of death for every asymmetrical horror game. However, seeing that this game has the backing of Friday 13th and DBD players, as well as it being on the game pass, I can see it lasting much longer than its predecessors. If players can keep this game alive, DBD will have some real competition and be forced to step up their game.
Update: I'm having so much fun playing killer with friends that I have to take breaks so i don't get burnt out. Once you learn the maps and know how to play your role, the game becomes way more entertaining. I also notice the devs are slowly rolling out fixes for game crashes and fixed the inv codes which shows they're paying attention. I'm not really a fan of the leveling/sp system but that may just take some getting used to.
