New World: Rise of the Angry Earth Review (Coyote)
It's OK. Maybe the OKest expansion ever.
It added mounts. They're alright, still kind of janky; I imagine they'll be polished as time goes on. However, I don't really feel mounts were something the game was sorely lacking. It was already piss easy and quick to get around the world, with all the shrines everywhere and the increases in base movement speed. But, whatever. I guess at the very least its something else to work on/towards with a new Riding Skill and a few skins to acquire; that said, the vast majority of mount skins are hilariously locked behind the in-game store.
With the mounts came some new time trials which consist of your typical gaming fare; quickly move through checkpoints across the world. It's basically just W keying across the map with some occasional speed boosting. I find it pretty boring myself.
It added a Flail. Which isn't very flail like. When you're not swinging it it retracts into the handle and looks more like a mace; I get that game physics and flails tend to make them floppy as all hell and they can be difficult to pull off, but if they weren't going to properly make a flail(or couldnt) then they should've gone with a different weapon, instead of this dollar store flail mace. The abilities are nice looking, but strangely acrobatic for a weapon that is typically the opposite.
The new zone is alright. It's just more angry earth stuff. And it's just an old zone from the vanilla game reimagined.
New level cap. But whatever. Levels and caps these days are mostly just arbitrary end points in gaming. Here it's a 5 level bump, and a crazy quick climb at that. I'd already seen numerous people already at 65 after only a couple hours of being live.
As the game goes more and more theme-park it feels less and less interesting to me personally. At any rate, the expansion is nothing ground breaking when it comes to new features. It's really kind of a bland expansion, and is debatable whether it shouldn't have been 15 or 20 bucks. There's just not a lot here.
