Kingdom Eighties Review (p11)

The main character in the game is a teenage boy called "leader" that the game hints at as being a descendant of maybe the monarchs that are the characters played in the previous installments of the kingdoms series.
And much like its predecessors the aim is to secure the "kingdom" by recruiting workers and archers, leveling up your kingdom's central camp, taking down trees and building fences and destroying the greed by surviving their waves of attack at night and progressively destroying their portals as you expand and then finally their cave.
Here however the kingdom is made up of different areas you progress through as "episodes" starting with camp site, suburbs, downtown and finally a mall area (total of four different areas) as you follow through the campaign.
Differences From Previous Kingdoms Games:
+ Hero "leader" gathers a group of friends (they are four in total) who follow him around everywhere and have different strengths so the character is not alone.
+ Theme obviously (eighties retro theme which includes a variety of locations you progress through episodes wrapped inside a campaign story, that would be representing islands but with no going back to each as you progress through the game) so to sum up location variety and one way progression.
- Story presented as short movie flashes you unlock with coins.
+ Some game dynamics are different for example you don't have farms so the kids i.e. "workers" pick up certain unlockable jobs such as pizza/popcorn/burger vendors, arcade gamers, etc..
+ You only have tents that get destroyed and must be rebuilt as houses in the episode to recruit kids, before that you just recruit them from certain buildings that remain standing as you progress through the zones.
The Artwork:
* Artstyle:
+ Beautiful especially if you're into retro art-styles. As with other kingdoms games Raw Fury doesn't disappoint here. The atmosphere is probably the game's strongest point.
- Game is pixelated and there's a lot going on sometimes in terms of colors and objects which can make it a bit overwhelming as your eye trying to distinguish between background and foreground especially as you're moving along which can be sometimes straining for the eyes.
* Music:
+ Nice music, eighties centered.
- Personally preferred the previous kingdoms games music.
The Writing and Story:
- Found this to be the game's weakest points probably, the story feels like it's written by a ten year old. Just bad and very cheesy.
The Game-play and Controls:
+ Good controls, had no issues at all there
+ If you like the game-play in other kingdoms games, this is almost the same.
How the game makes you feel:
+ Atmosphere a little less chill than previous kingdoms games but maintains the same feel with more colors which can swing either way depending on each person's personal taste and preferences.
+ For some reason found it a bit reminiscent of the 1992 home alone: lost in new york video game, especially the mall area.
The Ending:
- Similar to previous kingdoms games but you get a short video ending as part of the story line which I found is super cheesy.
+ Then the credits roll which you can't skip, luckily, because you get to see Sara's photo and this is not something you would want to skip, would recommend buying the game just for that. The personal touch from the devs was nice.
- You get the option to continue playing in mixtape mode which is a mode where you don't win and just see how many days/waves of greed you can survive.
Playtime and Replayability:
- You can finish the game in under 4 hours, it's pretty short
- You can replay it... if you like more of the same and would like to go through the same storyline again (yes the very cheesy one - fortunately you have the option to skip those scenes when they come up).
Worth your money?
Depends... if it's on sale and depending how much you're into eighties themes and would like to experience that and how much you're into kingdoms gameplay style. I don't regret buying it on sale as I have played all the other kingdoms games and did not want to skip this, the graphics are beautiful, and the theme is nice, but you have to think of it as an experience rather than a game. Would recommend buying an older cheaper kingdoms game on sale and seeing if you're into that sort of thing first.
