Clone Drone in the Hyperdome Review (Rakdinas)
Before i list a bunch of criticism, this game is pretty fun! All weaponry being able to kill in one shot can invoke a small sense of panic if one of the enemies gets a little too close. BUT the game comes with a few issues.
Combat:
Parrying is off the table. Whacking away the swords of the enemies doesn't do much, they will continue to try to finish their move. Eventually they pull back of course but your sword will be busy for that.
Two-handed weapons are basically useless. The only one that comes with a slight benefit is the katana which can deflect arrows (learned this way too late). Any other weapon you might as well grab a one-handed sword, since every sword cuts like a hot knife through butter. (the scythe is horrible). The trade-off for two-handed weapons should be increased reach, but they are only slightly bigger than the one-handed swords. The only two-handed that does this is Overclock's sword. Also why are some weapons store restricted? Upgraded weapons should be in the store, such as that flame dagger (which doesn't show it's a flame dagger until you pick it up). On that note, fire! Why are fire weapons nowhere to be seen? You got that flame dagger, Flameburns axes and... that's it.
The fists are good, but it would be nice to have a choice for when you upgrade them.
Sadly the game is also pretty easy. The tier 3 bots don't pose much more of a challenge than the tier-1 bots. Increase their movement speed or give them fire weapons, that would probably make them more of a threat.
There isn't much stopping you from teleporting to the character you are dueling and kill them before they even land when they jump down either. Perhaps make them jump to the opposite side of the arena where the player is?
Weapon grips cannot be moved, they are stuck to specific points. Would be nice like in Blade&Sorcery where the hand can move along the grip. This complaint is mostly for the halberds.
Throwing weapons doesn't work. The moment you throw something (very weakly, you barely have any reach) it loses it's ability to cut anything.
The door that leads to a weapon should be a special one, not one i can buy in the store for 20 coins. I had a run where i got the twinblade 4 times in a row.
Bows just don't shoot very far, gravity is affecting the arrows too much in my opinion.
Story:
It's... passable. The characters are very one-dimensional and after 1.5 hours i just stopped talking to them and went straight into the run. "The valiant knight" "the evil scientist". As an example, this can be used to not even generalise but describe the ENTIRE character. I've only seen this broken with a single line from Phantoma when she congratulated Overclock on her victory.
There seems to be some kind of "favor" system in play that influences only the dialogue, which is a shame because it would be nice if the characters could somehow help the player a little by having their favor, such as maybe a different starting weapon?
If you're going to do silent protagonist, make the protagonist actually silent, that includes the inner voice. The ending can still work if there has been no inner voice with a slight change to the dialogue. Now the player is given a personality that might not fit the character, that being meek and wanting to get on everyone's good side despite being a death machine in the arena and eventually killing the captain. It doesn't fit.
Sorry for the rant, but this is what i thought of the game. Again, it's still fun! But it can be much better.
