Arma 3: Creator DLC - Spearhead 1944 Review (Alter Reich)
Review Update (29/12/2024)
Old reviews are still relevant, so I only give comparison for consideration.
Spearhead 1944 vs mods (Iron Front and Faces of War)
+ Well-designed and tight map for defense and ambush scenarios
+ Good reload animations
+ Custom and loud explosive sound
+ Adaptive gunner position MG turrets (Their user might stand or crouch depending on the turrets placement)
+ Custom animations for heavy MGs
+ Assets with better texture
- Lack of content like British army which was involved in Operation Cobra (This point will be deprecated considering the next update of this CDLC)
- Reloads animations for bolt-action rifles are just the same
- Unstable performance, HOW might overdone the details of their map
Spearhead 1944 vs S.O.G. Prairie Fire
+ Two animation reloads for almost all of weapons
+ Built-in weapon tucking
+ Fun campaign
+ Both sides' weapons have good animations (OPFORs' weapons have inconsistent quality)
+ More varied explosion and heavy round sounds
- SOG has better weapon reload animations for all WW2 weapons except MP 40 and M3
- No OPFOR
- SH1944 campaigns are heavy performance-wise
- Tank interior are not modelled (but you can see all-black interior in 3D).
- SH1944 lacks gear noise when running
Additional comments
Performance (frame rate) wise, I think it is just as bad as SOGPF so I can't really judge harshly. Fighting in villages is great experience but when you're fighting in the towns, the performance really drops hard. It is a bummer, considering there are many battle in Operation Cobra (or any kind of engagement during WW2) took place in towns, compared to SOGPF where battle truly feels right when fighting in jungles and remote villages.
Then again, I've played Warlord game mode and I can tell performance is not too bad. The game run rather smoothly and consistenly. So I am not truly disappointed. Even so, I hope HOW make a smaller maps consist of farms and villages only instead of full-blown towns. Perhaps it really saves this DLC performance and reviews. So it is good that they do have smaller map which is available in their dedicated mod.
And please, learn one or two thing about reload animation for bolt-action rifles from Savage Game Design. I really appreciate the reload of many automatics, semis, and pistols (well, it's just P08 that I like, honestly), but not with the rifles which feels like they are just importing animations from IFA3.
What might be another issue for people is the fact that the faction system is as same as WWII mods on Workshop; Germany are put on BLUFOR while the US and France are put on INDFOR. While it might not be an issue for me, others would complain about this. But at the same time, I can see that they are making this CDLC so it can be integrated with WW2 mods like IFA3, FoW, and NF.
So yeah... considering the significant quality gap between this CDLC and SOGPF, buy SH1944 on sale. I still love this CDLC, and additional content can be found in the mod which they developed with the help of other modders (SPEX).
