A Way Out Review (VinroyIsViral)
A Way Out is a co-op exclusive narrative game where you and another player play as one of the two main prisoners, Leo and Vincent. Just to preface this review, I'll refrain from any sort of revealing details in an attempt not to spoil the game.
The story is a troubling affair for me. The interactions, settings, and banter throughout the story were superb. However, the whole overarching story felt fairly standard, and the ending was quite a letdown. If the characters weren't so charming, then I doubt that many people would be raving about the story as they do currently. It certainly isn't a bad story, but it has a decent bit of points that are less than impressive.
The gameplay is fairly standard for this sort of game. You have your quick time events, rapid button pressing, basic platforming, and more. There are even sections where you can do more involved gameplay elements, such as driving vehicles or shooting guns. Honestly, it's what you would expect from this sort of game from the trailers and concept behind it, but still.
The graphics here look pretty good. They aren't exactly hyperrealistic, but they fit just right with the scenario the game is going for. The sound design is also pretty solid, but nothing that will really stand out to you.
Overall, this is a pretty solid co-op game. If you have a good friend or someone else to play with, I recommend trying this game, as it is likely one of the best story-based co-op games out there. It may have its downsides, but that is mostly easy to overlook with how enjoyable the co-op experience is and how expressive the main characters are.
