This is one of the most incredible narrative experiences I have played in the last 5 years atleast. Lets talk about A Way Out:
The Pros First!
Graphics - This game has the signature style of Hazelight that will blend nearly cartoony and semi realistic character models and graphics together for a nice overall timeless look that will stand the test of time easily for many years to come. The world is beautifully made, with many realistic settings (hospitals, trailer parks, forests etc). The characters show true emotion and are designed well.
Story - This is the games strongest points. This is one of the most well written games I have ever played in a long time. The game starts off as a slow burn, especially compared to their newer titles, but will begin to ramp up to the point where you are glued to your seats. There are twist and turns throughout the story but NOTHING will prepare you for the emotional ending. I am still thinking about it. WTF. My genuine sense of shock when it happened was something that gave me goosebumps and I still am blown away by it. Hazelight does not pull any punches and the story ends in a very realistic way given the setting of the story and the ultimate twist. You MUST see this one through.
Gameplay - Pretty typical of hazelight studios, their gameplay continues to remain solid and they are the leaders in co-op gameplay for the modern era. No one comes even close to providing the same level of strategy, fun and story all in one. A Way Out is a more calm experience at first, with less action than the newer titles, but ramps up towards the middle of the story and rides out strong all the way to the end for the spectacular and insane finish. I was put off at first, but ended up not disappointed in the slightest.
Controls - The games controls are simple and effective. Pretty typical of hazelight. They manage to make a few buttons control a multitude of commands that keeps things varied throughout the game. It is keyboard and mouse friendly as well.
Mini-games - Typical of Hazelight, this game has a ton of minigames that you can partake in that will make you compete with the person you are playing. They do a fantastic job of making this completely optional but actually making you want to play (you can play darts, arm wrestle, play arcade games etc). The mini-games in this game are a lot of fun and i recommend you do them.
Value - This game is INSANE value. I couldnt even begin to recommend this game enough and if it is infact on sale, i beg you to give this game a chance. I cannot recommend this game enough especially since I have seen it extremely cheap before.
Lets talk about the few cons:
The Gun Gameplay - There are scenes where you can utilize gun gameplay and it is pretty standard but a little weak. The aim can get wonky and even if your supposed to headshot sometimes it doesnt and the reticule resets in the weirdest way. Its not enough to hinder the game, but its there.
The Slow Burn - The game starts off very slow. for alot of people this might be a turn off if they arent ready. It is very cutscene heavy and very story heavy but i promise you, the story is worth it. Some people hate slow burns though so I am mentioning it
Game duration - The game is VERY short. 6 hours or so to complete the game and thats with messing around and doing all the mini games. Extremely short experience...you are going to wish it kept going.
Overall A Way Out is a absolutely insane experience that I cannot recommend enough. If this game is ever on sale and you see it on the store, do NOT waste any time and purchase it immediately if everything i listed sounds good to you. You will not regret it!
Thanks for the read
