A Way Out Review (sanmay)
To be honest, beforehand, I actually expected something completely different coop-/gameplay-wise from this extremely famous title. But was I disappointed after finishing it with my wife? Nah, can’t really say so. Definitely still a good and recommendable piece of art. I guess you just have to know what you’re getting into. You see, it’s not really a complex game, in most levels it’s mostly about exploration, discovering all the minigames (which are fun to play against each other) or finding different ways to solve a situation. Often the goal is just getting from one place to another, or mastering short skill sequences (which are really easy and casual, actually good when you’re playing with your inexperienced spouse or child). It’s also quite short. But aside from all these aspects, I think where it probably shines the most is in its storytelling, the mechanics and the visuals. Never saw a title before where splitscreen works so tremendously well (normally I dislike this option, because it reduces the view, but not here). And seriously, how the story develops, and how the whole game design works together with the coop concept, still makes A Way Out a milestone in this category that’s absolutely worth playing. After all, it paved the way for the brilliant masterpiece It Takes Two, and is also a worthy successor to Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons (huge recommendation for both of those titles from the same devs as well of course).
