Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks Review (Hex: Footjob?)
Making this a positive review because I genuinely do love the game, and the devs have shown that they built this with love and that they listen to the community. It's a super fun time and I recommend it to anyone that like racing-combat games of ANY kind - it really does scratch the it for a lot of different franchises. However, there are some big issues that I've noticed and I do hope get addressed/fixed/smoothed out by this wonderful dev team, so lets do a little pros/cons list.
Pros:
• Art style is phenomenal all across the board and I think it fits the aesthetic of the WH40K-meets-Twisted-Metal vibe the game has very well
• They managed to make a driving game that actually feels good on M&K which is kinda crazy 'cause that rarely ever happens
• Devs are very open, communicative, and responsive, which a lot of dev teams aren't and it can lead to communities dying out
• Vehicles are super cool and the variety is awesome (would love to see each vehicle have more weapon swaps than just the primary, though)
• In-game community is super chill (I keep running into the same people and it's become kinda this common pre-match thing to dap each other up with the front bumper while spamming the ork screams)
• Game is just good-ol'-fashion fun, makes me feel like a kid playing Blur or Twisted Metal again
Cons:
• Some weapons feel like they're shooting pebbles while others two-shot you from across the map - the drill car and the motorcycle rely HEAVILY on their gimmick and the actual weapons on the vehicles themselves feel like they do almost nothing, while both of the tanks have ridiculous damage output
• The amount of people per vehicle really needs some kind of balancing limit - having 4-5 people on each team just camping the Stompa as tanks makes matches really slow and dull
• The Stompa - good god dude, I swear this thing is the Antichrist. 200m away? It's sniping you with pinpoint-accurate machine gun fire. Get close to it with the bomb? It traps you in a never-ending telepathic slam attack until you die.
• No host migration - constantly getting matches dropped because the host is on the losing team and quits halfway through a match is insanely aggravating
• No in-game chat besides pre-set comms - I do love the ork callouts, but having a way to actually communicate with your team, whether text or voice, would be amazing
• Explosions are prone to send you flying underneath the map until you die
• BIG explosions are prone to cause random split-second frame drops
• If you're holding the button to accelerate when you respawn, about 70% of the time your car will just lock up for a few seconds
• Lots of minor visual bugs (I know those won't last long knowing this dev team's efforts so far, just worth noting)
But yeah, I love the game, just needs some balancing and polish and it'll be genuinely perfect. Grateful to have good, fun car combat for the first time in a long time.
