Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - Dark Angels Chapter Pack Review (Attias)
I'm a big Dark Angels fan and while I appreciate some of the items here, I hoped for a lot more. Where are the torches or candles on the backpack? Belt daggers? Keys? Where are the other custom armoured items? Why give me a hooded helmet but not let me add robes to the other armour segments? I honestly would have preferred just the bare helmet with the icon on it. Also, what is up with the Heavy version of the breastplate? Is that a placeholder? It looks terrible, especially around the neckline.
Next, I've been saying for months - Dark Angels colour the casing on both their personal and vehicle weapons RED, not green. I don't mind the flair design of the plasma pistol and assault bolter, but the colours are off and as a collector and fan of the army, this just drives me insane. (Also, why the assault bolter? DAs thematically use a lot of plasma so it's such a missed opportunity not to give the skin to the plasma incinerator.)
Regarding battlefield role decals for right shoulder pads, the devs simply got this wrong. For example, there is no DA themed 'Close Support' Icon (i.e. for assault / jump pack troops). They simply forgot it. The DA icon for Fire Support actually uses a variation for the Battleline icon (so there are essentially 2 battleline designs; at least your tactical can look proper!)
These kinds of errors are just sloppy, especially for a paid DLC. I would encourage Saber to correct these issues. Yes, it's 'only cosmetic' but they are charging for a cosmetic pack so I think it needs to be both complete and correct. This stuff is all available in the codex. All in all, despite these armor and weapon cosmetic items leaking months ago, they still feel a bit rushed at best and incomplete/erroneous at worst.
To be fair though, I want to end on a positive note. I give BIG props to the devs for putting the work in to make the bulwark's flag/banner ability an actual DA flag when using the DA skin and not the Ultramarine one. I am sure this took some significant effort on the coding side, but it's definitely appreciated !
In the end, is it worth it? Only if you are a DA fan or a fan of one of their successors. For me, it was as they are my favourite chapter, even though I feel like the package could have been a lot better. I'm grudgingly giving it a thumbs up, but I hope Saber revisits it and at least addresses what's clearly missing or is outright wrong. If nothing else, I hope they learn from this so that future packs are of better quality.
