Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader - Void Shadows Review (Xabiar)
I am very impressed with the quality of this DLC. This sets a new standard for Owlcat, and I feel like calling it a DLC doesn't quite capture its scope and integration into the base game. Calling it an expansion feels more accurate to me, as It is an expansion in the sense that it genuinely expands the game in a way you feel throughout the game. It avoids the problem some DLCs have, especially RPGs, where you enter the 'DLC zone' and exists outside everything else.
That isn't the case here. Yes, there are new areas of the Voidship that add some needed detail and depth, but there are other, small things that you'll notice and appreciate if you've already played through it that touch the base game. Events in the base game that now have an extra option or two that wasn't there before. Crewmates and people that were in the base game that now have their own dedicated dialogue trees. Outside of a few parts which aren't voiced where other characters are, Kibellah is just as integrated and reactive to events of the game as any base game companion.
It's genuinely awesome just how much reactivity there is (especially for character origins) in and outside the DLC sections. Owlcat seems to have taken feedback from the base game, and built upon it in exactly the ways I was hoping for. The integration of Void Shadows is exactly what I want from something like this, and absolutely justifies a new playthrough to experience it. The new parts of the DLC become available very early on, and I would highly recommend starting a new playthrough to experience it properly.
The other stuff I haven't touched on is also great. The new archetype is very fun, if something I expect to get nerfed somewhat down the line. The writing has been excellent as usual. The depiction of the Voidship and the life within it is uncomfortable and unsettling, and it's excellent. Kibellah and the Death Cult are very well done, and depicted in a way I wasn't expecting, but found it made them much more interesting than just a group of fanatical psychopaths.
When the two DLCs were announced, I was pretty underwhelmed by the concept of Void Shadows, especially when the other one seemed much more interesting. I'm happy to say I was wrong. This is worth the money and your attention if you enjoy the game. If this is the standard for Rogue Trader DLC, I am very much looking forward to Lex Imperialis, and hope that there is more afterwards.
