Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Review (RickB)
Pretty decent CRPG if you like the genre AND you are into WH40K lore.
Warning #1: it has a slow start, as all CRPG games you need to give it a bit of time to get the ball rolling.
Warning #2: if you have absolutely no exposure to WH40K it might be rough to follow the dialogues. While the game does a pretty good job at providing lore details via mouse hovering important keywords, it could be still overwhelming trying to remember what is what and how it fits into this universe.
About the game itself, so far these my initial thoughts on positives/negatives.
Positives:
- WH40k lore, absolutely splendid and faithful
- Decent voice acting, maybe not on par with BG3 but still not bad at all, although only a small part of the game is voiced
- Good variety of dialogue choices, including skill checks
- Music is cool, though it doesn't reach the pinnacle level of Darktide crazy good soundtrack
Negatives:
- Graphics, it feels dated, especially the animations are rough, but to be honest this is the least important aspect when playing CRPGs
- UI is a bit confusing
- Only some of the dialogues are voiced over
As for the combat, I've mixed feelings so far.
It's a tad slow imho and a bit too simplistic, need to play more and see how it goes.
Overall, while Rogue Trader doesn't have the same production value as BG3, it's still an enjoyable game especially for WH40k fans. So far it's a 7.5/10 for me.
