Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters: Duty Eternal Review (Dorn)
I've been a longtime fan of Warhammer 40k, both for the games on the PC as well as on the tabletop (I've even had the opportunity to play in a weekend tournament at Warhammer World in Nottingham, UK), and currently I have spent 293 hours playing this game with the Duty Eternal DLC at the point this review is being written. So, to save some time for those who would reply "TL;DR", here's my suggestion regarding this DLC; Buy it for the frigate mainly, the Techmarine is a nice addition for the sake of variety and the Dreadnought is very powerful and correctly limited in availability.
In more detail:
- 'Mostly negative' reviews have been left, and this DLC is not deserving the criticism provided in those reviews. The main negative point raised is that the Dreadnought can only be deployed on Technophage missions that have much higher difficulty, and on standard missions, you can't opt to take it; if you could take along the Dreadnought on every mission, YOU WOULD BREAK THE GAME! It is a powerful tool but as Grey Knight Dreadnoughts are very rare in the lore of 40k, it makes sense canonically to not have them available for every mission. In addition, this is not the main important reason to buy this DLC nor its most impacting feature.
- Techmarine - Adding to the already diverse selection of Knights, the Techmarine can add mechanical healing for your Dreadnought on Technophage missions, but primarily, its main power lies with the servitor minions it can bring to each mission. Through the use of upgrades and purchasing better armour, you can take several servitors along, each armed with different weapons that allow either overwatch, support fire, provocation of enemies or blast area attacks. Its melee weapons really shine though with the ability to absolutely destroy armour on enemies.
- The Frigate - THIS is why you should buy the DLC. Somewhere along in the storyline, you will be provided a mission to clear a voidship (Pious Absolution, a Gladius frigate) of Chaos taint. Doing so then sends the Gladius back to Deimos for repairs and soon after, it will return to join the Baleful Edict. Once in your fleet, anytime a new bloom spawns and provides more missions, you can send a team of 4 knights to tackle a mission and at the same time, you can take the Edict to tackle one yourself. This doubles the coverage of the sector by your fleet and the number of missions you can manage. The full reward (Grimoires, Servitors, Requisition, but not Glorious Deeds) are then provided upon success.
Seriously, it is my honest opinion that those who left negative reviews do not care for the balance in the game, and have not understood the importance of the features it provides aside from the Dreadnought. It is worth every penny and I wholeheartedly recommend any player buy it alongside the other DLC (Well, maybe not the Castellan Champion unless it is on sale). 9/10
