Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters: Duty Eternal Review (bcbeltz)
Like others, I wish there was a 'I recommend with caveats' option because there is good and bad with this one. I have only played through and beat the game once which included this DLC and the Execution Force one so I'm not sure how the vanilla game played without DLCs. Overall I would recommend the game package as a whole and it seems on par with Xcom 2 and Phoenix Point! Tactical combat is excellent and the unit and enemy variety is great. Battle maps are beautiful and thematic and I loved the fully destructible terrain.
Regarding the Duty Eternal DLC...I had no expectations going in, but could see how if others have already beat the vanilla game, this DLC could be skipped without regret. Since I used this DLC on my first play through I was fine with it. The dreadnought unit, once accessible, was awesome and a beast in combat. However the missions I could use it in were few and far between which was a shame and a waste because the dreadnought does require a lot of resources to access and keep operational. Also in the final boss mission, I was not able to use the dreadnought even though there was clearly a slot for it in my squad. The game didn't say why I couldn't take the dreadnought so it could have been a bug or obscure game mechanic that prevented it.
Other reviewers disliked the Tech Marine unit in this DLC, but I really liked it and used one in my primary squad. It was a bit more complex than other classes, but extremely versatile and could adapt well to most mission types with its servitors and upgraded gear.
Other reviewers have mentioned more difficult and unbalanced combat missions with this DLC and I would agree with that. Some of the enemy spawning felt ridiculous and battles could often bog down with many enemies churning through their actions. With that said, I was able to make it through all battles with only a little save scumming so not a deal breaker for me.
Overall, I love Warhammer 40K Daemonhunters and it really scratched my tactical turn based itch, but the Duty Eternal DLC needs some fixing before I'd recommend it.
