Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters Review (DT_RicoRaynn)

Another title that makes me wish there was a 'meh' rating on Steam. Shame that gaming in general seems to be trending into the mediocre more often than not.
Pros
Warhammer 40k: I know. At this point we actually have a fairly solid number (if not quality) game encompassing the 40K universe. Which is surprising, but I will always put that as a positive because while the universe is bat shit crazy, it is a lot of fun.
Grey Knights: my personal favorite group of space marines, even if I really love and collect the Astra Militarium. Grey Knights were my second army and their design has always been my favorite of the space marine legions.

Meh
RPG Customization: this gets a 'meh' rating. In this game type, you should have free reign to customize your squads. It's just really sad in how it's implemented. There isn't a unique amount of variety among classes or skill trees and when compared to other titles in the genre (think Xcom or Jagged Alliance, yes even that old ass game) this is a little wanting.
Graphics: they are a little 'cartoonish' even to me, but don't let that be the 'make or break' on getting this game. While it is a little odd for the IP, the design and artwork is especially top notch and their artists definitely put in the time to learn the source material.
Weapons: overall, it's a fairly good variety of what you find in the lore. I would have liked a bit more variation in how they operate (a psycannon is pretty much just a heavy bolter with extended range and lack of covering fire) but still, the team obviously put in work to understand the lore behind the IP and you have to appreciate the heck out of that.
Voice work: its there. That's about the most I can say about it. It's not fantastic or so god awful you notice it. The squad talks....a lot...and sometimes it's hard to tell who is saying what (you or the enemy) but that was probably because the saved some money on voice actors by having them pull double duty.
Bad
Bugs and crashes: quiet a few, although this has gotten much better at this stage. Still, that first impression is vital and they kind of flubbed the landing on release.
RNG: this is the biggest letdown of the whole thing. I can kind of see what they were going for when they designed the 'warp storm' feature. Throw in some chaos which might be nice considering we are actually battling a god of chaos. But that's the thing. Random RNG is never truly fun. Even on the tabletop, rules are established to set up some sort of tactical play for each side. Here, the warp storm crap will always bring something bad against you as the player. So it's not really chaos and is instead, just a crap ton of unique ways to screw you over. Which feels kind of pointless and becomes more tedious than interesting, imo. Nothing quiet like clearing a map and then having a ton of crap respawn simply because the purple bar hit full. Now a 15 minute mission just became a 30 minute one as you deal with it. It's a weird mechanic that the game would be much better with a bit more tuning. RNG in games can be enjoyable. It adds variety and forces a player to adapt. Here it's a bit overused, aka the bar fills incredibly fast so you will end up with at least three RNG events per mission at the minimum and since it's never really anything positive (you can gain some benefits from the sugre based on your researched abilities but the negative always comes with it) it's just there to be more tedious.

Cover: Cover is god awful here. When you look at other games (to include the tabletop) cover is a huge part of it. Giving additional advantages if you know how to maneuver and exploit the terrain. Not so much here. It has all the workings of the 'half', 'full', or 'no cover' options, but they don't seem to do anything. You're still gonna get smacked, you'll still be able to smack people, and it seems really underdeveloped.
Weapon range: this is really odd to me as well. For most of your squad (unless you go big on the two handed guns) your range is woefully short. Which doesn't feel good for the most part. There are things you can use to close the distance effectively while avoiding damage (Ageis, Teleport, ect) but it really seems odd how short range the storm bolters are.

Conclusion
Overall, I'd have to give this a 'meh', buy on sale rating. If you're a fan of the lore than you'll probably find a bit more than the average player will that you enjoy. However, if you're coming from one of the more refined and polished tactical squad shooters, then you may be disappointed. In the end, I'm not too salty that I bought this, but it's definitely going to be a title I will abandon and forget about for a few years here and there as other, better experiences release. Probably didn't help much that I played the jewel that is Mechanicus right before attempting this one.
