Wargroove 2 Review (Emham)

Wargroove 2 : Bigger, (B)rattier and Better than Ever
Wargroove 2 marks a massive improvement from the first game with an array of new units to help flesh out the possible strategies that the first game introduced, charming new characters and some neat representation, and a challenging bonus mode that honestly is a blast to play. I admit to have been skeptical of this game, as Wargroove 1 didn't exactly win me over all the way, since it seemed to just be "Advanced Wars, But Luck Is Illegal" and the commanders all played the same with just 1 interesting ability. Wargroove 2 solves this by revamping the groove system in a way that gives each commander MUCH more versatility than just their one and done ability.
If you were kinda mixed on the first game, I honestly encourage you to give this one a try. You might not walk away thinking Wargroove is the best thing ever (I know I still have some gripes with the base formula), but you will walk away satisfied with a product forged with love. This isn't just a sequel with a few new unites and an extended "CO Meter", it's a refreshing new take on its own formula that isn't afraid to mix up its own meta with a fresh new set of tactics.
Give it a go, it's more than worth your time.
Pros :
- A new, better story that explores the lore of the first game in a way that's much more enjoyable for story seekers such as myself. (While I haven't completed the final stages, I've at least felt more engaged with the world than the first game)
- New units and buildings that twist things up, giving you new ways to approach your strategies. Do you have what it takes to bring your foes down?
- A fun new mode that has a lot of replayability. If this mode is able to be expanded on by player content with mods and workshop content, this easily could launch the game up from a good game to an excellent game
Cons :
- Soundtrack feels... emptier compared to the first game and I can't put my finger on it. I don't find myself as hyped up by some of the new tracks, and the choice to change some character themes is one that feels baffling given how well the first game's soundtrack was. It doesn't have as much 'groove' to go with the improved war aspect. Hope I'm not alone in this.
- Much like the first game, this game feels 'Too Balanced', in that it's afraid of allowing any kind of meta to take over. While this is a good thing in moderation, much like the first game, it makes things feel very safe and samey in some areas. Thankfully new units will keep things fresh in multiplayer content, but it won't scratch the same itch as the Wars World did. Commander's at least feel better than being copy pasted by having the same stats (This is remedied in the new conquest mode, where each commander has a unique passive perk, making them feel more unique).
- Perhaps it's tucked away someplace (so I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong), but it seems Arcade Mode is gone. In addition to being a neat way to play multiple non-story skirmishes back to back, Arcade Mode allowed neat exploration into character's interactions and alternate story twists. Conquest Mode is fun, but I'm not as tempted to play the other characters because I'm not getting that arcade mode banter that made things refreshing to try each commander with. Since most conquest 'stories' play out somewhat similar, you have even less incentive to try out other commanders.
