Voidwrought Review (danieljamesfreer)

A solid game worth your time. I had a lot of fun with Voidwrought - it's beautiful, plays well, and has a great sense of exploration. I think its nonlinearity is a bit detrimental though, I was quite far into the game when I acquired what felt to be some of the core abilities.

Player movement feels mostly good, although you do retain a bit of momentum before coming to a stop making it feel a bit "slippery" at times, especially when trying to land on a single tile block. I did get used to it pretty quickly though, it wasn't really an issue after the first hour or so of play. Speaking of movement, I found this game's version of the morph ball , although creative and interesting, to be painfully sluggish. I understand the intent with this ability from its visuals, but it was so cumbersome to move in this form I dreaded every time I had to use it. I really think it could be 2x the speed with half the acceleration and deceleration times.

Hitboxes and hurtboxes seem fine on regular enemies but don't seem to line up with the sprites on some of the bigger bosses. At times it felt like a bosses hurtbox disappears entirely when it transitions from one attack to another, meaning if you're pogoing attacks you just fall into the boss and take damage (even though your attack sprite was well and truly in front of the boss sprite). The bosses go from challenging at the beginning of the game to extremely easy once you have some attack and health upgrades - the attack upgrades felt appropriate for regular enemies though as they are pretty spongy at base damage.

A final and very minor gripe is the movement speed that the currencies fly towards the player. You can outrun these, and often I found myself waiting at each rooms exit waiting for the money to catch up with the player so I don't miss out on it. It's only for a second or two of course, but when it is every single room you definitely notice it.

Those points aside, the pros vastly outweigh the cons with this game and I recommend Voidwrought. Smacking stuff is satisfying, the visuals and sound design are top notch, and it is a well crafted game.
