Void Scrappers Review (ƵØMBØRǤ)

I honestly didn't really enjoy the early game, but I stuck with it because I liked the theme and aesthetic, and I'm glad I did - like many of this style of game, it gets a lot more fun once you've gotten some upgrades, weapons and characters unlocked.
At first, the weapon variety feels limited, and some weapon types feel far less viable to the point of seeming unbalanced. But unlocking upgrades and characters opens up combos that feel much more unique and fun. Orbital weapons, for example - at first they orbit your ship too slowly and you can never really get them in a quantity where they form a "shield" around your ship and protect you from enemies that approach. With the orbital-focused character though, they automatically seek out and destroy enemies instead of just passively circling you, and with upgrades that let them trigger projectiles and explosions you gradually become a swarm of death. Explosives can be upgraded to fill the screen and obliterate enemies before you see them, lasers can bounce and spawn new beams that sweep through enemies - projectiles are the only weapon type that doesn't feel all that interesting, but even they have upgrades that spawn projectiles when you dash or when an enemy dies so they're not unviable, just don't seem to have as much possibility for interesting gimmicks or combos. There's a glass cannon character that does double damage, but can't use shields, and upgrades that boost damage or always give you x2 or x3 upgrades when your shields are depleted, and it DOES consider the character that can't use shields at all to have "depleted shields". It'd be nice if there were some more variety on the surface, but there are some fun combos once you get into it.
It's not perfect - since it relies pretty heavily on focusing on one or at most two weapon types, banishing upgrades and rerolling weapons is pretty essential, and those are particularly expensive upgrades. It can be frustrating when weapon and upgrade RNG prevents you from being able to get a decent run started. I liked the background music at first, but it got very repetitive very quickly, all the songs kind of sound the same. You can't access the options menu when pausing to, for example, mute the repetitive music lol - and the developer has said there aren't any more updates planned, so unfortunately there probably won't be any more added, and it WOULD still be nice to get some more variety. That said though, still an enjoyable time, definitely worth the price and I'm glad I picked it up.
