Void Scrappers Review (Krimpson)
BRILLIANT GAME.
Even though I'm only a casual fan of the rogue-like genre, this game was incredibly captivating immediately after starting my first round. Learning the basics is pretty sink or swim, where you get directly thrown in the ring - after you've been blindfolded and spun around a few times. Even though this was a bit disorientating, you pick things up very fast and start to appreciate the fast-paced gameplay. The game plays very much into its run-and-gun aspects, which made for a very little downtime. You find yourself bobbing and weaving through hoards of ships, which I found fairly reminiscent of running trains in COD Zombies. But to summarize, it's just really fun.
Void Scappers does an excellent job at making upgrades and weapons interact with each other in simple, yet dynamic ways. Maybe you want to be an agile projectile-based glass cannon, or possibly a lazer-death-machine that stops everything that dares to come close to it - there's a fair amount of making each choice a good one, which is fairly rare to see in a rogue-like.
While I do enjoy the game, it does have a few shortcomings. Shield (Health) regeneration can be quite wonky at times, where it seems pretty RNG-reliant (Which is kinda expected from the genre). The most consistent way to regen is to hope for a shield card on a scrap upgrade, which is inconsistent at best. The other way is to hope for a random event that spawns a free shield, which seems to happen less and less as the threat (which mostly relies on time) progresses. A small gripe, but still notable. Also, the game grinds itself on the standard boss feeling like just another regular ship but just with more health. None of them felt memorable, except of course the final boss (who is the only one to break the mold of this pattern). It would be great to see more unique and interesting bosses here and there because you don't get that now. Other than that, there's little bad to say about the rest of the game.
Overall, Void Scrappers delivers an excellent experience that greatly surpasses its price point. It's worth it on sale, for its standard price of $4, and it would even be worth it at $15+. Definitely a great find, and definitely worth your time. Bravo 8BitSkull.
