Virgo Versus the Zodiac Review (etherealAide)

Virgo Versus the Zodiac is one of the most compelling RPGs I've played, which isn't saying much, my game library is much smaller than many other people on here, but It's still a great game!
There are probably three things that piqued your interest about this game: the story, the combat, or the astrological theme, and I'd say the game handles all three of these things really well!
The story was extremely invigorating, I binged this game for hours, I collected around 10 in one day. It's a bit slow to start, or perhaps that's because I paused the game near the start, but the later chapters get so interesting it was hard for me to put the game down. One thing that makes me love a piece of media, and love a narrative, are interesting characters, and I'd say this game does it for me. Even if you don't agree with Virgo's motives, some of the goofy scenes you encounter, or the few times she reveals her softer side, make her a likeable character nonetheless. Not to mention the other main characters, and the side characters who are all charming in their own way.
The combat is honestly stellar. I can barely begin to describe it. I have cravings for this combat just like I have cravings for food. There's not much to describe apart from what's already said in the game description, it's turn based but also live action at the same time sorta? Regardless, it's cool. There's a bunch of gear too, every piece of equipment gives you stat increases, a stat decrease, and a move to go along with it, which is a lot of minmaxxing potential and allows you to try a bunch of things! I didn't mess around with many new moves much, once I found what worked for me it kind of stuck, but that could be very appealing for some. There's even a hard mode and a boss rush, neither of which I've tried, but if you really like the combat, the game has plenty of content for that. On the other hand, people who prefer the story can cruise through with the easy mode. On my second run of the game I tried the easy mode, I barely had to scavenge for new gear, and only had to upgrade my equipment a few times, and passed through the game easily.
It's been a while since I was into astrology, though I was pretty interested in it back then, and I'm slowly getting back into that phase now. You definitely don't have to believe in or know astrology to understand this game, but I feel like it does improve the game experience a bit. I can't say how accurate it is to actual astrology, but it seemed pretty decent from what I could tell.
Other stuff that this game did well include the art, which is marvelous. I took around 200 screenshots while playing, it's great! There's also a bit of character customization and pets, which is always cute. I don't pay attention to music that much in games, I probably should much more to be honest, but from what I can vaguely remember the soundtrack is nice. Puzzles and obstacles don't seem to hard to get by, except one stupid ice puzzle. I hate that ice puzzle.
A few drawbacks, apart from the ice puzzle, that are in this game would be how the different endings are dealt with. This may be more of a nitpicky thing. However, a tip near the start of the game tells you that your choices, whether you pick more Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable ones, would affect your ending. This is a lie, the type of choice you pick only affects the color of the box during the choice selections screen. The ending is decided by 3 specific choices, where the type of choices might come into play, but still that tip is quite misleading. I spent my entire run choosing mostly Cardinal and Mutable choices, yet the Fixed ending was my first ending, which was quite surprising. It's not a dealbreaker or anything, but slightly infuriating. Also there's a bug that won't let me get the Cardinal ending, which might only be on my end, but it's also pretty annoying. Other than that, this game is great! I highly recommend it!
