Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth Review (Wysaw)
WARNING: This is game 3 of a series. Play "Prelude to the Fallen" then "Mask of Deception" first.
Disclaimer:
My 55 hours of playtime represents one complete play through on Normal difficulty,
Played entirely on Steam deck.
Short Review:
This game is the perfect finish to the series, they really went all out.
The only reason you should be here is if you completed the other two games in the series.
If you did then buy this one as soon as you are able.
Taken as a whole: the entire series is a incomparable masterpiece.
Go in as blind as you can, I wont spoil anything but don't even read any more of this review.
More details, no spoilers:
Once again the pacing is just relentless, playing for just an hour or two a night I was always left with some new development or twist or revelation.
There's so many plot points that get woven in and resolved properly that the game goes on for like another 10+ hours after any other game would have wrapped up.
There's even a whole load of post credits scenes with some major developments.
It never felt rushed despite this. Everything is given its proper amount of time.
I will say this game on Normal difficulty is the hardest yet. I never had to grind once but there were some crazy difficulty spikes.
Sometimes certain characters were only doing like 1-3 damage and I don't fully understand why.
All I'm going to say is save before every fight so you can change your roster if needed, use your brain and look at the win/defeat conditions as well as the type advantages.
Welp, Gonna be honest here I enjoyed this series immensely.
Probably the best JRPG series I have played in 30+ years of gaming.
If this was made with Final Fantasy production values it would likely never be surpassed.
I am so glad I got to play it and also really sad that its over.
I doubt I will find a game that is anywhere as fun and well written as this for a while but, I haven't played Monochrome Mobius yet so lets see...
