Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth Review (Konzo Beefman GuyDude)
The moment I booted up Mask of Truth, I knew I was in for something special. It gave off a certain air or feeling that was very similar to when I first booted up Muv Luv Alternative for the first time as well, and boy howdy those feelings were not betrayed. What a beautiful, wildly fun, and heartbreaking journey this was. Many reviews I noticed echoed very similar sentiments to what I was wanting to toss into this review as well, so I'll just say that I 2nd a lot of the highlights of Truth that other's point out.
What I will toss into the thunderdome here is, while Mask of Truth continued that high bar already set for it's top tier VA work, amazing soundtrack (which they went above and beyond for the finale here), and stellar writing and world building, what surprised me the most was the creative liberties they took with the combat encounters. I won't spoil the goodies of course, but with the reintroduction of certain mechanics and setups for said combat encounters, the battles definitely became just as much of a high point as the story itself for me. The ending as well, was just the perfect bow that tied together what was a 150 hour journey from the start of Prelude, to the end of Truth here.
The entire package of Mask of Truth reminded me a lot of Xenoblade Chornicles 3. It truly felt like this was the developers swan song, like this was the last game they were ever going to make. What an unforgettable journey this was. Thank you Aquaplus, for gifting to our big blue planet here this beautifully crafted epic that you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
