Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception Review (riviars)
Definitely 100% recommend. This series is so unique, warm and engaging you will never regret it. Gameplay-wise... well, it's a VN, so expect more of an interactive book rather than a game proper. But if you are after the story, you will never find anything quite like this anywhere else.
THAT SAID.
Translation was done by somebody having no respect for the story or the culture. It is a proper translation, mind you, but even with my low understanding of Japanese voice acting I can tell some things are mistranslated. The general meaning is kept, but the exact wording gets no respect and it takes away from a lot of scenes.
Censorship. It makes 0 sense to have it in this game, but some angry purists decided to add their 3 shekels. I picked up on some, and I can only wonder how much of the game really had been gutted where I didn't notice. Not cool. Especially since none of the original content is supposed to be controversial in any way.
CG in general could be more rich. I feel like many parts of the story could benefit a lot from at least a little effort over the generic character avatars.
That said, the game is still 100% recommend. Just a little bit of hate on the localization team, who couldn't help themselves, but leave their own negative mark on this title.
