Until Dawn Review (SassyShankCrankNewt)
I've played the original game 52 times and the remastered/remake 6 times. Here are some pros and cons of the remake/remastered:
Pros:
- All of the classic scenes from the original game that you know and love are in here, and I mean (EVERY SCENE)
- More scenes adding to Matt's characterization that were cut from the original game are in here. He is much more developed and so much more loveable, and with these new scenes and dialogue I feel much more connected to him as a person.
- All of the characters are the same for the most part in characterization/personality, but with looks they look even more amazing and realistic in this version.
- New achievements! They are fairly easy to get.
- New totem type (Hunger) allowing you perspective into the Wendigo's journey. Totems are more interactive as well.
- New interactables!!!!!!!! Items you can pick up and interact with for fun. Super cool items.
- (SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER) You can save Josh now! He can live!
- The game overall looks much more crisp. It starts off during the day rather than at night which is a unique change, but not unwelcome.
- Same gory deaths, but much more real looking. Overall the game looks insanely real.
- (SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER) They changed Chris's death with Ashley. In the original, if you "shoot" her, she will glare at him as he stands there begging her to open the door and just watch as he dies, feeling no remorse. Basically she kills him out of spite and doesn't care. In this version, they make it seem as tho she is in shock and eventually she hears him and runs to help but is too late. So rather than her doing it on purpose, they make it an "accident." Not sure if this is a pro, for some people yes. For me, I prefer the original take on that.
- They changed the Wendigo screech, which I don't mind. It sounds cool!
- New added scenes to prologue showing Beth interacting with Chris and Beth/Hannah interacting with Josh as well as it shows Hannah preparing to meet Mike. I love this addition, as I always found it difficult to connect with Hannah due to a lack of content but I feel much more sympathetic and like her more as a character with the added content in the prologue.
- On that note, new epilogue! Only if Sam survives though. I think it is a cool way to show the PTSD Sam suffers from, but doesn't add much to her character/the story. Really just shows the effect the events had on her. Still cool though!
Cons:
- incredibly stuttery, specifically during cutscenes and during running QTE segments, meaning a higher chance of missing them and getting someone killed. Pay close attention and press the corresponding key sooner rather than later, because if you press it on time but not right away it will delay and say you missed it in some situations.
- Sometimes the map won't load, so you have to guess on where to go as you walk the void (such as Ashley in the mines walking to the trap door, it all vanished so I was walking through nothing and had to guess).
- Sometimes even when you walk the right way the characters will turn around but this rarely happens.
- (SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER)(SPOILER) for finding clues, such as Josh's phone and the Stranger's Wendigo Journal, in order for it to count toward the achievement and saved clues, you have to scroll through it ALL THE WAY. So, scroll down the messages/pages and back up and then turn the page. Super annoying. For Josh's phone I had to scroll down, up, and then exit his messages/phone to count it.
- Same for the interactables, turn them around and look at them to count them.
- A LOT of the achievements are bugged and won't show up so you gotta look online for dumb things to do in game to trigger them (EX: The achievement you receive for getting all achievements, won't show up on steam even if you get it. You have to go in the clues, click a few/wait 10 seconds and it should trigger on steam. Literally makes no sense)
Overall, is it worth the $60? I really think so. While the stuttering is the worst part and super fucking annoying, they KILLED IT with this new remake/remastered. It truly is amazing and wonderful, from the kills to the new totems to the new ending possibility. The characters are the same ones you love, just with added spice and voicelines. Small mistakes and bugs aside, this is definitely worth the money. Original fans will love it, and new fans will fall in love with it soon enough.
