Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection Review (CindyK_JA)
If you are a fan of games like Tomb Raider, then you are apt to really enjoy the two titles included in Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. They are crafted with incredible detail and the scenery is breathtaking... mountains, valleys, ancient ruins, etc. The story spans across both games with some characters appearing in both. I found the story engaging, the characters likable, and the voice-acting excellent.
Although the stories are different, the two games are very similar in terms of game play. Both have a great deal of peaceful exploration with an occasional burst of skirmish. Most combat in initiated by you needing to enter a guarded area. Thus, you have options in terms of stealth, weapons, and strategy. There are some pretty intense combat sequences towards the end of both games but these were survivable for me.
I played on 'Explorer' mode which makes the game much easier for those not adept at action gaming. There are sections that involve a lot of climbing and swinging from ropes and these were quite forgiving. I struggled with using a controller to drive a 4x4 Jeep which is your mode of travel for several chapters. Especially when under fire, I tended to drive pretty badly. But, the game has very regular save points and you just try again when you fail.
Collectibles are scattered throughout the games (journals, treasures, photo ops, notes, optional conversations.). Many of these are not visible from the main path and you may need a guide to find them. However, none are required for game completion. There are a number of interesting mechanical puzzles which involve activating old machinery. All required puzzles were reasonable and enjoyable to solve. There was one timed optional puzzle that made me crazy but, in the end, I prevailed.
I found Uncharted to be easier than Tomb Raider. The leaping and swinging in Explorer mode was simplified and I fell to my death much less often. Weapons and ammunition are abundant and I never ended up stuck without a way to defend myself.
There are a wide range of achievements which include speed runs, driving precision, and completing the games at verous levels of difficulty. From the begining, 100% was not in the cards for me but I did try to finish with a reasonable percentage. The game allows you to circle back to chapters and encounters to pick up missing items and achievements. You also have access to all weapons and unlimited ammunition as 'bonus' items once you complete the game.
Overall, I really enjoyed Uncharted and highly recommend it to those who crave an action/adventure with a focus on exploration. Although there are some tricky scenes, there is no horrific boss fight at the end of either game and I was able to complete them with minimal frustration. My only regret is that Uncharted 1,2, and 3 are not available for the PC!
