Umbrella Corps Review (LordSithaniel)

Review

The infamous Umbrella Corps. I bought this game as a joke and in order to have all resident evil games on steam. Now I played it a lot. Mostly with community made matches that were pre organized or through a few friends I made. I think the release of this is just funny what they tried to achieve with resident evil despite having actually some interesting mechanics to offer.
Gameplay
Surprisingly the movement in this game is absolutely great. You can vault over anything, climb on a second floor in a really neat animation and even lay down and crawl at a decent speed. The whole game is really quick and its fun to move around. Shooting works decent as well, switching into a first-person mode for better aim at will. Due to the bad internet connection with most players, often the hit feedback just sucks so people tend to die at the same time or suddenly. There is a fun melee system in there which caused me to play with people melee only via the pickaxe.
That is the only positives I can say. Its just that the gameplay and modes just don’t work in any way good together.
There are zombies on the map which attack you incase a player shoots your transmitter which makes zombies ignore you. A whole lot of encounters end due to one player shooting that thing, the other dies and both die because suddenly 99% of the map comes sprinting at the player and the zombies keep respawning at a very fast pace. Rarely you can manage to kill a player and replace your transmitter, in public games I managed to do it once or twice in my few dozen matches.
Additionally, the systems of the game don’t work that well together with the modes. It completely screws some teams over. Having a vip protect mission? Go into a corner of the map while one guy stays behind and two people cover him. Due to third person, they can protect places and shoot around corners without any problem.
The game focuses more on being a competitive game due to its 3 vs 3 setup. They seriously tried to make this an e-sport of some sort. Yeah in a game that has so many easy ways to exploit certain stages it would have been funny to see people camp in corners and shoot around them while people try to capture a point.
There is also a brutally hard singleplayer mode which just gives the player specific challenges which are mostly luck based or by exploiting the enemy ai as there is no way anyone playtested this.
A lot of the things in the game just feel like an asset flip, considering it was made with unity im not surprised. But the final nail in the coffin for me was that there is no server/lobby browser. All is done via matchmaking. Which is super annoying to play multiple games in row since the waiting time is a large chunk of your total playtime due to matches being short anyways,
Story
There is none. Testing is mentioned but what this implies actually no idea. The sp does not really offer anything of value in that regard.
Sound
I did not remember anything except the main menu theme (due to matchmaking being impossible) and some of the completely stock combat sound effects.
Graphics
It’s okay, I guess? But in a multiplayer game visibility is important. This one is so drab in its colour scheme that hard to make out enemies. Whole game just looks average at best.
Conclusion/TL;DR
A seriously unique, awful and forgettable multiplayer experience. I don’t really know why anyone thought it was a good idea to release this game, considering it plays like a bad mp side mode in a singleplayer game but they ask a hefty price for this one.
Totally unbalanced and dead multiplayer game. Avoid
