True Skate Review (XboxDonut)
I was very excited to hear about this game's release on steam after playing on mobile for years. And here were a few things I wanted to go over.
1. People need to understand that the intent of this game was to be a skate sim much like session than like skate or town hawk games.
This game is difficult but not to the degree of session, so getting behind it is slightly easier in that sense. But if your expecting this game to be similar to skate or tony hawk, it won't satisfy you in that sense as landing tricks can feel way more tedious compared to those games.
2. They had to find a way to implement their mobile controls to a gamepad in their own unique way.
For that reason the controls will feel unlike anything you might be used to, as this was originally a mobile game, and most of you I assume were used to flicking sticks and pushing off with buttons, this new setup comes with a learning curve to that. I'll be honest, the fun doesn't really start until you get the play style down which can be a bit to wrap your head around. For some having to actually get good at the game to have fun can suck.
3. The game has its bugs and feels very broken at times but it was still in early access as of this review, but it adds character to the game in a strange way.
When my ankles aren't being snapped by the sheer velocity at which I land a fs 180 on the mondo ramp, my skater is ragdolling like a gmod character. If your tripping balls this game will be a blast for you right now. But to be honest glitches were even part of true skate mobile (they literally had a setting called "glitch mode") so doing wacky things with the glitches adds to the fun for me.
4. There should be a way to port all the progress from mobile to the pc version.
From what it seems like, mobile and steam edition are looking a lot like different games. And I'm sure most people would agree with me on this: after years on playing on mobile, people don't want to feel like they are playing what is essentially supposed to be the same game they played on mobile for years again from scratch, especially if they poured money into the original.
5. $20 bucks for a game that started as free is bonkers to most people.
I get it, the devs need some profit gain off of the steam release, but the game in its current form I cannot confidently say its worth 20 bucks. It does not have enough content nor polish to justify the price, especially in comparison to its mobile counterpart which was free.
6. Multiplayer should totally be considered.
Much like real life skate boarding, you get better at progressing with friends. You can grow and become better together, and if one is more experienced, they can help the newer players. This also just gives an overall more incentive to play the game. For most people playing with their friends provides a better experience as they can have a rivalry with each other towards progression. While I understand this is not something that has really been implemented in the original mobile version, your talking about being on steam now, which has a huge network of players so investing time in mulitplayer will totally be worth it.
7. With that said, single player games can feel therapeutic but.....
This game isn't really that smooth yet. The difficulty of the game isn't enough to really keep some players at their controllers with more attempts in them, as the bugs can be frustrating, much less learning how to even do a trick. So I wouldn't find myself playing this game for hours trying to get better, because there really isn't much incentive to try. You land a trick, you feel good about it. That's it. And that is not enough for most players to want to keep trying. I dig the simplicity in the sense where its just like you log in and boom, just skate. No bs, no gimmicks. But that kind of wears off. The game still leaves a lot to be desired.
8. A sand box mode would be sick.
This one is kind of far fetched but if you could give more players power to create their own communities within the true skate community, that will go a long ways. Session did that well, and if true skate had that instead of playing the parks everyone has to buy or just being limited to the free parks, this game will totally become more fun.
9. This game honestly does not feel like a definitive skate sim....but that's not really a bad thing.
Make use of that, this game is wonky and goofy and yes realistic when it absolutely wants to be, but the super serious vibe of "real skate sim" is being voided by the bugs and goofy character movements. But sometimes its best to have fun with that, and even encourage your players to literally break the game. Because guess what that does for you devs, it gives you a chance to improve your game and see how or what players are doing to make glitches happen. And also interact more with your community through the fun in flaws, because honestly, the time I really did have fun was when I saw my board rocket through my skater's booty attempting to do the nuttiest trick known to man. And then patch them in newer versions, but still give players the option the play the game with those glitches just like in mobile.
10. I gave the game a good review because I want to see it thrive and feel it truly does have a lot of potential behind it.
I commend you guys for getting this far. I really do. And I really love skate boarding, so I really want this game to do well. There isn't many good skateboarding games on steam, so maybe this could be it, or not who knows. But with time I hope this game becomes better and people will come to appreciate it more in the way it was intended to be.
