Trombone Champ Review (Wibiz)
Trombone Champ is an unconventional rhythm game. While others in this category rely on buttons to press and your reflexes to press them, in this game you just move your mouse up and down and you get to see when you need to press the button far in advance. This is made easier by the fact that the game doesn't care about your accuracy on individual button presses, as the game consists on long presses of the button and just being in the general ballpark of where you need to be.
And since the game is mouse-oriented, players who've played FPS games can find this easier than other rhythm games. You don't need to worry about multiple buttons at once, or anything else than just moving the mouse where it needs to go. It's honestly a very fun experience coming from those games that have a very high skill ceiling and you never feel like you're good at them.
But it's only my subjective opinion that the game is easy. Different people have different skills, but it's also for those reasons that makes this game so unique. It exists in this perfect niche of players who know their way around the mouse and those who play rhythm games, kind of like a dumbed-down, more entertaining version of Osu.
The gameplay is not the only thing going for the game, as it has used different elements of humour which are more than enough reason to play the game. You don't need to try hard the game, as you can just pay attention to the lyrics scrolling by and convert the game to a karaoke game, or you can intentionally make the song sound dumb by playing the wrong notes. All of that can be done because you can't fail a song by missing notes and your trumpet is a part of the song itself, as opposed to other rhythm games where you only go along to the song.
But if you do go out of your way to try hard the game, that is possible as well. A lot of the entertainment will go away though, and the only amusement left is just the thought of try harding a song about baboons with a trumpet that makes fart noises. But that's not to say it doesn't feel rewarding, because it does. All in all, this is an easy recommendation. The game is not catered towards just one group of people, as there's no strict rules and the game itself has stated "most importantly, have fun".
