Touhou Genso Wanderer: Foresight Review (cetaypascool)
I've finished the main story and done the rematches, so I think I can give an honest opinion on this game.
Good points :
+ This game is way kinder than Reloaded
As opposed to Reloaded where you go back to Level 1 every time you go back to the shrine, in this game you actually keep your level, like in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. It makes it so that you don't have to farm EXP every time you try a dungeon where you lost. It definitely feels better.
You can also immediatly retry a boss, so you don't even have to go through the entire dungeon again. Now this is in my opinion a little too kind since even Mystery Dungeon doesn't do that, but I'm fine with it.
The bosses themselves (or at least most of them), while they can still be annoying, are definitely not as bad as Reloaded. They don't feel like you need a very specific strategy to beat them, or that you need to know in advance what they are going to do. It is possible to beat them in your first try (it sounds normal, but trust me, Reloaded has some awful bosses).
+ The skill tree is a nice feature
I've always been a fan of skill trees in a game, because it makes you choose the skills you learn throughout the game, as opposed to just learning set skills. Everything that gives more ways to approach the game is a good thing. I think that being able to reset it kinda makes it lose this appeal, but it allows you to prepare yourself against bosses, which is nice.
+ The game looks really good
The graphics and the musics are phenomenal, and it wasn't a surprise. Reloaded already is very pretty for what is basically a fangame, and this game didn't break it.
Now, for the downsides :
- The story is... meh
This might be a personal opinion, but I think the story is not that impactful. It also feels a little forced - The "plot twist" (if I can call it like that) seems a bit convoluted, and I feel like the choice for the main antagonist is a little weird, taking into account the existing Touhou lore.
But of course, this is my opinion on it. Also, I think that you don't absolutely need a good story to be a good gamek, so this is not that bad of a negative point.
- The partners are not very well balanced
Among the 4 partners you can get, the second-to-last one is by far the best one, which gives almost no reason to play the others except by preference. But this is something that can easily be fixed in an update, so I'm not worried.
- The final boss feels very bad
I won't spoil who it is or what it does, but the final boss was definitely not a good experience. While the first phase was fine, the second one felt like fighting a Reloaded boss, as in you need to prepare yourself with a specific equipment if you don't want to have to both farm EXP like crazy AND still spend 20 minutes pressing A on it, dealing 1 DAMAGE PER HIT. It definitely was not a very enjoyable thing.
And there it is. A last negative thing about it would be the lack of content, but it's probably because the game only came out 1 or 2 weeks ago, so it might change in the future. I still enjoyed it, and I hope more people try it out, as it is definitely a very good game in itself.
