TheHunter: Call of the Wild - New England Mountains Review (thelamaknows)

Being a native of NH I am biased towards the map despite it's flaws. My home town of Nashua even gets a mention in the script of the story missions.
The map is stunning and absolutely captures the landscape of northern NH (or any New England state for that matter). The wide river valleys with rocky and shallow streams are perfect representations of the end of the dry summer season with water levels low and the water far from the safety of the tree line. A solid mix of low land meadow and alpine mountain terrain along with several water features for duck and goose hunting. Overall it's an idealized chunk of land that in real life is nearly impossible to find here any more. Plus of course less ticks than in real life.
The abundance of drink locations can make grinding a chore. This map really encourages stalking across hill and dale to find prey rather than sit on a tripod all day. Ducks and geese are plentiful and rarely take more than a few minutes of calling to achieve results. Just like in real life, the map is lousy with turkeys. They are more common than cats around here IRL and in game you won't go more than a quarter mile between hearing their calls.
I do think moose are way over-represented on the map but it's the signature big animal for the region so I understand the inflated numbers. Not that moose are uncommon up north, but they out number white tail in the game.
The devs also put rabbits and pheasant in the deep woods, which is not where they are found usually. Ironically I never see pheasants in game where the cut crop fields are which is exactly where we hunt them IRL. Grouse AI needs improved. In game they drop to the ground then fly away when the hunter is still far off. In reality they sit until you just about step on them before exploding into flight right in your face.
The tight forest and somewhat smaller game lends itself well to smaller guns like the .30-30 lever action as well as archery and handgun hunting. Birds are well represented for upland and waterfowling. As noted- turkey are everywhere. Predator species are a serious challenge and can be very time consuming to hunt.
All said- the map is pretty hit or miss at times. Long stretches of very little animal sign of any sort then areas that are completely covered in tracks and need areas. It can feel a bit like the map is actually smaller than it is because animals are a bit too confined.
As DLC maps go, it's a solid okay. Not amazing and didn't add much for species or gear, but it is visually one of the best looking maps on offer. As a native of the area, I can confirm the map is accurate as anyone could ask for. While much of the terrain could also include areas like upstate NY, a lot of PA, and even Delaware- the riot of fall colors really does set it apart as a New England map.
