The Wreck Review (mcmxc)
"The Wreck" is a visual novel about family, motherhood, parents' impact on their children, and how children shape and change their parents. From a storytelling perspective, the game packs some incredible punches and will make you laugh, cry and everything in between during its 5-hour runtime. As a game, this is more of a linear experience with some interactive elements, but there aren't any significant choices that branch the narrative in different ways. You'll have seen the "Choices Matter" tag, and I can tell you that there is one choice to make in this game, and although it does matter to the narrative, it doesn't impact the overall experience. (Basically, this is a "one playthrough" game, you won't revisit it!)
There are a few small criticisms. The pacing suffers a couple of times towards the end, and I feel it could be closer to 4 hours long and still be incredibly effective. But overall, this is a well-crafted story with likeable and relatable characters that are worthy of your time.
NB Other reviewers have complained of motion sickness, but there is an option to lessen that effect in the menu. I have motion sickness and had no problems with that box ticked!
