The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Review (lickthecar)

Saints & Sinners: Honestly, Worth It

This game is really good. Disturbingly so, if I'm being honest. For a franchise like TWD, with so much potential for side stories that flesh(see what i did there?) out the world, it does its job way too well for VR.
First off, I might as well go over what Walking Dead is basically about, for the uninitiated. The Walking Dead is a comic book about an apocalypse scenario where people get sick and turn into cannibalistic meat-sacks of hatred called Walkers that only go down with headshots, decapitation, and "braining", or stabbing a knife or cleaver straight into their skulls. Supplies run low, dead keep increasing, blah blah blah humans are the real monsters. That's basically all you need to know.
Saints & Sinners puts you in the customizable role of the Tourist, a dude/gal(the choice is yours) headed to New Orleans off a tip from an elderly acquaintance named Henri. He's got some dirt on the Reserve, a large stockpile of supplies from the military, and it's up to you to find it. There's only one problem, though: two factions, the Tower and the Reclaimed, stand in the way of your search, forcing you to find allies, kill walkers, and hold your own among the multitude of wonderful ways to keel over and die in NOLA.
The gameplay is the perfect blend of combat and survival, and I'd say it's one of the best ways I've seen it translated to VR. You collect and salvage random trash you grab off the streets(or steal from others) and use it to craft weapons, food, and healing items while slowly upgrading your base and finding hidden recipes. The combat is quite literally on point, having you run around braining and shooting walkers and people throughout the city, all while working towards the Reserve.
The visuals are also top-notch. From what I've seen in the comics, it's like Blue Skidoo-ing directly into the pages, with the same gross-ass walkers and similar-looking humans. The music is hauntingly atmospheric; not as good as something like Portal 2, but definitely worth a listen.
The amount of content you get is astounding for the price, too. A full 10 or so-hour campaign, with an extra questline(that i really don't want to spoil, so i'll zip it), an endless combat-only mode, and the ability to just keep playing after you beat everything. When games with less content can go for the same 20-30 USD price tag, it's a real good deal.
To stop my gushing about this game, it's good. If you're in the mood for a good VR survival title, it's probably for you. If you want a nice zombie game, it's also probably for you. If you already liked watching the dead walk and you want it strapped to your face, it's probably for you, too. to put it simply, it's one of my favorite VR experiences. try it if you can, 'cause it's definitely worth your while.
