The Thing: Remastered Review (futbutts)

If you're considering purchasing this remaster, I would advise against paying full price. The game design feels quite dated, and with the modern control and aiming scheme, it becomes extremely easy. The "fixed" Trust System isn't effectively supported by the AI or game design. You encounter AI companions, usually engineers, who serve a specific function and then either disappear or turn into Things. There were only one or two moments where the AI companions' behavior was surprising, but even then, it was due to glitches rather than good design.
The game mechanics also feel outdated and nonsensical. For instance, grenades are almost useless in combat because your character drops them at his feet instead of throwing them. Additionally, you find extra items like flashlights, but they aren't a depletable resource and can't be given to companions, leaving you with an unnecessary surplus. There's also no need to conserve ammunition or resources because ammo boxes are abundant. There are also a wide slew of bugs; whether they were part of the original game, or surfaced in the creation of this remaster, either suggests a lazy, rushed, cash-grab of a development cycle.
This game could have been amazing with a complete remake. The Trust System combined with modern game mechanics and design could be fantastic. However, this remaster falls short. While there are some entertaining puzzle segments and a few laughs, I wouldn't recommend spending more than $10 on it. It's more of a nostalgic curiosity than a game to be genuinely enjoyed today.
