The Pathless Review (LuckyDreamz)
Firstly I would like to state that I do not think this game is worth 40 dollars in terms of game-play after experiencing it.. Only get this one if it's on sale if at all, it's asking too much for what you get in engagement.
What you're mostly paying for here is Annapurna and what they are known for, that being the overall art-style and unique experience, which are always lovely in their own way don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed a few of Annapurna's games before this one. But if you are not familiar with Annapurna's style and are expecting something a bit more substantial or fulfilling, your appetite will not be met here.
What will draw you in is a female protag archer in a feudal era-esque time period theme, running around and fighting bosses. Which is true, that is what it is.. But maybe not what you think at first in meeting expectations.
Before the criticism let me give the positives:
The main enjoyments that I got from this game are the aforementioned art-style and animation; very nice and whimsical and as a fan of ninjas/shinobi and dragon fantasy type stuff it looked cool and got me into it. You will traverse through heavily wooded areas and mountains where there is plenty of space to explore looking for the puzzles you need to complete in the form of castle-like ruins and towers. The movement is incredibly fun because you get to zoom and rush forward with leaps and bounds with every arrow you nail on the talismans that are laid out almost everywhere; smooooth and satisfying. The boss fights pair really well with that, having a really cinematic feel and the way it always has you on the move taking advantage of your everlasting speed boosts. The puzzles laid out across the map leading up to the boss fights are simple enough, pleasant and the whole experience is.. relaxing!
Negatives and Criticism:
To clarify what I said earlier about appetite, if you are an avid gamer looking for a challenge or an in depth story or even a somewhat lengthy game to keep you occupied then this game is not for you. While it does take a few minutes to get the hang of finding your way around due to not having a map at all, everything about this game is easy. Which is why I say it's more relaxing than anything. It's basically a huge lump of simple-and-straight-forwardness churned up and slathered onto an extra long slice of bread.. but the extra bread doesn't add to the flavor which is mid at best.
The puzzles are too straight forward, the boss fights are too simple and end too quickly and there are only 4 of them plus the end bit. There are no health bars on the bosses which was surprising but it's because you literally don't need them with the fight ending so fast. You don't even take damage as a player.. Did I mention that? You do not have hearts, there are no enemies in the map other than the bosses and you cannot die from what I can tell, you just kinda start the last sequence over with no consequence whatsoever and there really isn't much else to do in between those fights other than zip around everywhere which feels empty. The only collection action is the little golden bits you get from the smaller puzzles that make your eagle carrier you a bit higher, which is alright and makes traveling to higher areas easier but there isn't anything else to do or find except for the plentiful and exaggerated "lore" if you want to call it that, scattered around every puzzle that all really say the same thing in the form of woes from warriors who passed trying to fight this great and TERRIBLE "challenging" evil. Which made me laugh honestly after experiencing the fights. So yeah, lore isn't even great, not much story at all, minimal dialogue from the bird mother... Everything is pretty linear and lackluster imo and it get's repetitive and boring really quick.
End note:
I will say this game is worth it if you are looking for that sort of easy, relaxing, whimsical-natured game to play after work or if you are stressed. Also would recommend for a kid; pretty family friendly other than the very mild looking armored skeletons left around where the "lore" can be found. Would recommend if you are an inexperienced player in general. It's definitely got all that going for it. Simple, aesthetically pleasing, fun. Worth a try..
..But NOT at the full price, absolutely not.
