The Mortuary Assistant Review (TheBigIrishNut)
Pros:
- In-depth and mostly accurate embalming process.
- Randomization of scares and spooky events to keep replayability fairly high.
- Demon identification system is challenging enough, but not so hard that you get frustrated.
- Doesn't rely on just jump scares to instill fear and unease.
- Great audio quality (Thunder can startle you in this game).
- Bodily noises are quite wrenching (good for horror).
- Story behind the events is actually fairly good and compelling.
Cons:
- A bit repetitive after you've played through the endings. Replayability has a cap.
- Some of the scares are events that require key items to trigger specific endings, but these will continue even after you have the ending. So a tad annoying to keep encountering these.
- Character mouth movements are a tad robotic which can bug some people.
- Some bugs that can soft lock a game, forcing you to quit and resume from last checkpoint. (stretchers getting stuck with cold storage doors closed thus preventing you from taking the body out, getting stuck in cut scenes due to graphical glitch, etc) Annoying, but not game breaking.
- Demon identification system has some quirks with sigils disappearing or the ashes showing the wrong demonic house on the body (I believe most of these were fixed in most recent patch though).
Overall a 9/10 horror game. Definitely provides a challenge with an overarching story that makes want to keep playing to find out more of the main character's back story. The scares are well placed and some are even subtle to where you might miss them if you are super focused on the embalming process. Others still get me even after playing the game over a dozen times. Would absolutely recommend any fan of horror games pick this up. Would like to see some DLC or expansion to the game to improve the replayability of it as you can only do the same thing so many times before these scares will eventually lose their steam.
