The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story Review (Zerafalgar)
I expected it to be great, but I was still amazed.
I'm going to avoid major spoilers altogether and try to spoiler tag things that I could see being interpreted as a minor spoiler.
I finished one playthrough of the main storyline and a lot of the side content
having played on keyboard + mouse and the middle of the three starting difficulties
Combat: Good, but not perfect
The combat system itself is wonderful, I felt powerful throughout my entire playthrough, and never got bored with how diverse the approaches to fights get despite the fact I played far from optimally in regards of using what everything that was at my disposal.
There only were two instances where I felt like enemy attacks were not fair, but that was primarily due to the reason I had no idea how to avoid them at first.
There are sliders that allow you to change difficulty at any point during the game.
While I felt that when I was defeated, it was deserved, yet not too punishing...
It also seems to me like at certain part of the game, the protagonist's power started accelerating too much compared to the opponents he would face, just due to how much effective health you can get. I mostly felt like the middle of the game was a bit too easy in comparison to the rest.
Also some bosses were way too easy, in my opinion.
Story: I loved it!
As someone who's been familiar with the main character's story long before playing the game, I was eager to learn more. And the game certainly did not disappoint. However, I think the game did a good job of explaining the fundamentals for those who may not know much about the protagonist or anything else that's going on.
Visuals + audio: Amazing
I honestly don't know if I have much to say here, I think the artstyle and the sound design were both on point and created levels I really enjoyed exploring.
Achievements:
You can certainly get most of them within one playthrough.
Flaws: Nothing ruined my playthrough, however...
- The worst of all in my opinion - The dash that you use for moving around and fast forwarding dialogue both being assigned to spacebar. Unexpected dialogue caused me to skip several things accidentally, especially at the beginning.
- Unkillable enemies? During the whole playthrough, I stumbled upon two regular enemies that I have slain multiple times before, but one was just immune to damage even when it normally shouldn't have been, and the other seemed to have their healthbar bugged out. However, I could just walk past both of them and continue my adventure.
- I had to reload a level one time because I was limited in how often I could dash for some reason, after the reload the dashing was back to normal.
- Spelling errors in places where they really shouldn't have been. The intentional spelling errors were great, though.
Conclusion:
I think it's a great game, good enough for me to finish the entire main story in one session.
