The Legend of Legacy: HD Remastered Review (Postmodern)

I want to say yes, but I have to not recommend this one. I really love the Alliance Alive, this art style, the saga combat. Legend of Legacy was a very pretty game when it released, and while I think the remake does justice to the visuals, that's about the end of the changes from the original. LoL has a very thin story, still has systems that are not entirely transparent with how they function, and characters that are interchangeable with little consequence. With remakes like Star Ocean 2 and Persona 3, this feels more like a tweaked port than a remaster.
I'm being harsh but that's not to say it's all bad. If you do want a challenging rpg, and you enjoy the saga style of progression, then this is certainly a choice. The areas have a lot of variation, the exploration can be fun with finding all the little secrets. Games rarely punish you nowadays for losing, but that's not the case here. The game has a risk and reward balance for fights- Your hp is healed to full every fight, but dying will reduce your max hp until you can rest. You can run from nearly any fight, but running will take you to the start of the dungeon. If you're deep into an area, you may have to choose between pushing forward while hurt or stopping to back. You may also come into a boss battle where you cannot run. You'll be fighting for your progress in those cases, and smart strategies will have to carry you. It can be a difficult but rewarding game.
Still, I would recommend passing on this. Fifty bucks is a high price for a 3ds port. Alliance Alive was a much more enjoyable game with an actual story also made by Furyu, and if you haven't played that, give that a try instead. The Saga series is also having a small comeback, with new entries and fan games like Secret of Varonis. There are just better choices out there, and it's disappointing that a game with so much potential didn't receive a little bit more love into it's remaster.
