The Legend of Legacy: HD Remastered Review (Kainminter)

Legend of Legacy is a 'SaGa like' JRPG.
Instead of EXP and level ups, you get stats and learn skills as you take actions in battle.
Unlike most JRPGS, this one is very light on the story. It is much more exploration focused.
If you enjoy the strategy, grinding, and gradual progress side of JRPGs, then you might find some enjoyment in this one.
However proceed with caution. $49.99 is pretty high considering the quality, and this game is definitely not for everyone.

PROS:
- Even though this game treats the story as an absolute afterthought, it still has a few surprise memorable moments sprinkled in there
- Formations/Stances are interesting. The way you can create and use your own sets of stance formations, including additional unlockable stances, adds a nice layer of strategy to battles.
- The way they handle guarding/tanking in battle is one of the more interesting takes I've seen in a turn based JRPG
- Elemental contracts add a nice strategic element to battle, once you unlock them.
- I like the 'hire a ship' system. You pay money to send explorers out to sea, they come back after a certain amount of real life time passes (whether you are playing or not). They bring you goodies. The most expensive ship is 5000 to hire, but can bring you back some of the strongest equipment in the game. As a bonus, this version of the game allows you to save skim, so you can re-roll what they brought you.
- As you explore, you fill out a map. You can sell the maps you make to the towns merchant. Selling him fully completed maps can net you some great money. Its a nice incentive to explore, and helps you figure out where to go next.

CONS:
- The remaster didn't add much to the game. Neither new features nor quality of life improvements.
- Some of the background graphics didn't translate as well from 3DS to the bigger screen when they are zoomed in.
- The music is unique. Its not terrible, but it neither invokes emotion nor does it get the blood pumping. It is mostly a lot of ambiance tracks. This includes the battle themes.
- Story almost non-existent, which is bizarre for a JRPG.
- Learning and using magic is a pain in this game. Its much more comfortable to stick to physical builds, at least for me.
- Battles are slow and become quite tedious further in. Everything starts to have so much HP
- Even though you can recruit all 7 characters, there's no reason to use more than 3 of them ever. Building up their skills and stats takes so long
- You lose ALL progress since your last save upon death.
- This game should not have been $49.99. The quality just does not match the price point.
