The Dream Machine: Chapter 6 Review (cocoacat)
So I played through the game once again from the beginning since last time I played there isn't chapter 6 yet. And I do like the concept of traveling through dream and exploring subconscious minds for science. Also Selma's village looks cozy and nice to live in. The plot flows like a stream in those previous chapters.
But starting from chapter 6 the plot is going downhill. Why the baby can dream of Victor's past? Why there exists so many different versions of Victor? Why is there a god for some reason? Why Victors suddenly can conveniently just wish for things to go his way when in the other dreams he has to follow their rules? It would make more sense if these things happen in their own chapter where Victor explores his own subconscious, but this is supposed to be the baby's subconscious so it's quite confusing.
And the biggest problem I have is with the ending. It is kind of meh. When the dialogues with the machine starts I thought it would be possible for the player to choose if we will sacrifice the baby or Victor. But there is no choice. Instead Victor just went straight from being nervous about being a father, to being a vegetable that quite literally cannot take care of his family. Not saying that killing the baby and the machine together is any better but still. I hope there could be another way to end, like shutting down the machine without sacrificing anyone?
And the execution of the last scene where Victor just chilling on the same island from the beginning makes it feels like, he was not prepared to be a father at the beginning, and he still isn't at the end. As if we fought all the way to the end just to end up at the starting point again.
Although it doesn't have the strongest ending, I will still give it 9/10 for having a consistent quality in the first 5 chapters. Plus the art is very unique.
