The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan Review (Old Man Gamer (OMG))
Man of Medan is a fantastic interactive story based game with multiple options and fun dialogue. The overall feel is that of a teen horror picture. It is not frightening but does carry some enjoyable moments of exhilaration. The graphics are well done, controls are okay on controller but better on mouse and keyboard, and story enjoyable.
The best part of this game is the open feel to the story. There is a lot going on, and it feels that there is a lot of freedom on how you want it to play out. The progression makes it more enjoyable, as there are divisions within that add an element of immersion, rather than just being the observer and decision maker. The dialogue has that cheesy teen horror movie feel, but the graphics, music and style deliver beyond that.
The music is very well done. Not a fan of the credit song, but was able to skip it. The introduction is quite epic in itself. The soundtrack is mixed well, and adds to the immersion of the game.
The graphics are well done. Especially due to the nature of some of the environments in this game being very similar. There is not a painful repeating pattern that distracts and detracts.
The only downside that I have for this game is that the story was painfully obvious for me to figure out. I believe that it missed the curve ball or twist as they hoped. This did not ruin the game for me, however. It was fun watching the characters discover the truth and the horror that was going on.
In all, this first iteration of The Dark Picture Anthology has me hooked. The game is fun, light hearted and relaxing. I am not a big fan of quick time events, but these were easy to manage, so I would still deem it good for casual gamers as well. I recommend this for people looking for a good driven story game that you can enjoy the ride and not have to take too seriously, while still entertaining and even with co-op capability.
