The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood Review (Vortaex)

Very enjoyable visual novel, although I think it gets surprisingly political for a game supposedly about space witches and fate. I got a lot of enjoyment out of designing my own cards, although the resources to make them get a little sparse towards the end, which is a shame. I'd hoped we'd get an infusion, like in the demo, so that we could finish making a full deck, which unfortunately didn't happen. The ending also felt a little anticlimactic, after all the buildup, but maybe that's just because I played it too non-confrontationally, who knows?
Still, the characters were all very well designed and engaging - every Witch felt distinct and unique, and I never felt like the developers were reusing concepts or ideas, which is great in a visual novel. Everyone had their own voice.
The music is great, but I didn't feel there was anything that particularly stood out, either. Mostly good atmospheric tracks. There's attention to detail when it comes to sound effects though, which is always welcome; this was more apparent in the earlier chapters however (chapter 2 especially).
The pixel art is excellent, and works well with the premise, somehow? I'm not sure. It makes it feel more otherworldly, I think. Each character possesses a huge amount of detail, both in the reduced and full pixel art, which really brings them to life.
The story is... honestly I'm of two minds about it. I really liked it all the way up to about three-quarters of the way through, where it sort of began to feel like the game became a vehicle to wax poetic about politics until the climax, where we go back to our regularly scheduled programming for about four minutes before the end. I liked those sections as well, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I was playing another game, thematically. Apart from that though, I really enjoyed the themes and topics the game discusses, and while I wouldn't consider it world-shattering or ground-breaking or anything, it did make me think about some things I haven't before, and presented some choices that I did struggle with, though mostly because my "ideal" option wasn't presented or because I believed two ideas to be equally valid.
Overall, good story, I only wish it was longer.
Also, I wish I had been able to read more fortunes, but with the amount of variations the game has to account for already that might be asking too much honestly. It's impressive how malleable the future in this game to begin with is really, though mostly about small-scale stuff and the ending.
In summary, Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood has my recommendation, though it would definitely be prudent to try the demo to see if this kind of game is for you first. I liked the card designing and artstyle very much, and thought the story was neat, if short.
