The Chant Review (Glitch)
Overall, I really enjoy the premise of this game. It's a bit rough around the edges, but for being made by such a small and new developer the creativity really shines.
Pros:
-good graphics
-detailed monsters and lore, they all feel very creepy, well thought out, and a bit different when in combat
-interesting confrontation choices, there were many times where I could choose to run instead of fight
-can be very creepy when characters are being developed, hearing them go mad in the gloom is interesting
-combat itself is fun without being too difficult or easy
-exploring different areas is intriguing
-History and lore is well fleshed out, and reading notes is worth it
-Intelligent access to materials, not too much so it's meaningless but also sparingly enough to allow for tension in combat
-Useful level up system
Cons:
-Pacing can feel a bit rushed and off, would have liked to spend more time in the beginning getting to know the other cult members before diving into the ritual
-Can feel a bit less scary due to the abundance of enemies, again pacing would be a bit better if there were more creepy and quiet moments without enemies to build tension (might just be a personal opinion though)
-Lack of character development at times
-dialogue choices can feel a bit unclear and inconsequential, kind of like the game is in a weird limbo between being a singular narrative experience and a choice-driven one.
-Puzzles aren't very memorable
Overall, the Chant is a great concept and a good game with a few rough edges. 7.5/10 would recommend to anyone who's into witchy stuff, cults, or action-packed horror like the resident evil 4.
