The Beast Inside Review (SebbyPhantom)
Slight spoilers below!!!
So I FINALLY finished this game and can say that this is one of the absolute WORST games I have ever had the misfortune of playing.
Gamplay, story and graphics are just not good and after completing the game, experiencing all 4 endings and finding most of the notes/ story snippits i wasn't able to find any redeeming qualities.
The gamplay:
Very varied gameplay that could have been good but effectively didn't manage to deliver. You walk around a lot, are chased sometimes, which are the better parts of the game. But then there are the absolutely stupid bossfights a la resident evil biohazard that don't really belong into this game, weird cutscenes that completely pullyou out of immersion, stupid minigames and "puzzles" that are either too hard or too easy and are completely abandoned after the first few chapters.
The graphics:
The game does not look good either. 90% of the assets seem to have been moldy wood and candles. The character models are pretty ugly as well. The cutscenes are the worst because the character models look like little clay figures that were moved, it looks unnatural and doesn't add anything to the game or story.
The story:
Sadly, the absolute worst part of this game was the story. It is split into present and past. The part in the past could have been interesting but it is very completx and with the constant swapping of perspective of the two main characters you are thrown in and out of both stories without ever getting into either. The present story is absolutely dispensable and uninteresting - dude and his wife move into a "shack" (a literal villa) in the forrest so he can concentrate on his FBI work when he finds an old diary, they start getting stalked by the soviets and well... that's about it. All you do is shoot "anomalies" with a futuristic device to find clues of the stalker, run around in the forrest, are thrown into a well for some reason and drive your car into the river because...idk?
The story starts out quite good but continuously gets worse with each chapter. The latter chapters are also considerably shorter and it seems like the developers just wanted to get it over with. There is no real reveal or explanation of what has been happening, the last chapter is just endless cutscenes and telltale style decision making that clears up absolutely nothing and leaves you unfulfilled and frustrated. I still have no idea of what the story is supposed to be, why it was split into different time lines and why the absolute F*ck this was made into a game in the first place.
Small little things that absolutely pissed me off: if you want to see all 4 endings you have to play the whole damn game AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN (or back up the save files). It took me 10 hours for one playthrough! This is just cheap generation of playtime. Then there are amnesia like "open the door", "move this thing" movements that are inconsistent and annoying, a number of parts in the game are luck based or end up in a trial and error (chasing sequence where obstacles randomply appear in your way so you have to start over), unnecessary and cheak jumpscares that are completely removed from the real enemies you have to face - they scare you just because.
So, in short, if you like pain and want to torture yourself, go for it. But it is abolutely not worth the full price, half price or even 80% off.
