The 7th Guest: 25th Anniversary Edition Review (ThemboVolante)

What can I say? It's a classic. Of classics, Mark Twain once said that they are something, "...everyone wants to have read and nobody wants to read." This game is a little bit like that. Part Clue, part Myst, I firmly believe this game inspired many later escape room puzzlers like the Rusty Lake series. If you enjoy FMV games, point-and-click adventures, and puzzle games you might want to check this one out just for it's historic importance. That being said, the game was always a little wonky, and the 25th Anniversary Edition isn't any less wonky than it was when you had to wait for your grindy 2x speed CD drive to load up those grainy FMVs. Some of the graphics have been touched up... a lot of the FMVs haven't. Some puzzles can be put into an unsolvable state. Sometimes you click on an object to look at it and you get whisked away into another room. You can't check the map without resetting your position on a floor. It's a real mixed bag, but games did just kind of used to be that way.
